    Traxxas Velineon Cooling fan

Good Day. I was thinking of getting this fan for the MERV's ESC.

    http://www.rcplanet.com/Traxxas_Cool..._p/tra3340.htm

Just wondering if anyone has it on theirs? How easy is it to install? Any wire cutting or soldering required? It says, it simply connects into the velineon vxl-3s accessory power connector but i'm not entirely sure what it means?

    Cheers

the stock controller is the velineon vxl-3m - that fan might be too large to mount.

any smaller fan with screws and you should just be able to screw one screw between the cooling flaps on the esc - it will hold fine there.

i just noticed that this fan is for the 3s not 3m. dammit! thanks for the tip wiggy. might look into that. but how does one power it up on a merv? i really don't wanna be cutting wires and all that but if i have to then i will. anyone running an esc fan on their vxl-3m ecs? if so, how did u do it?

    thanks again.

you must be careful with fans,

if you power them straight from the battery, you are limited to 6 cell NiMh or 2s Lipo

If you power it from the receiver, the 3m wont power very much of a fan through the BEC, so other electronics suffer (servo) - - - - i couldn't even get two 15cm fans to run without over-drawing the stock ESC

Just curious, is your ESC over heating and under what conditions?
    That was easy

Hi annonymous. I've got no heat issues at the moment. But i've got a 3s lipo coming soon so i'm not sure if i'll get heat problems then. Also I wanna connect my 2 x 2s lipos into series. I'm also not sure if a fan and a motor heatsink will help..

    thanks

air flow will be key...... 3s should not affect heat to the point of too hot, if at all, 4s will probably be the same.........at least in my testing

make sure your motor is geared correctly for the applications and conditions you will be using - and over geared motor pulls more power, making more heat

should a fan be necessary, i would use a single fan similar to this: 25mm fan

    should be fun
    That was easy

sweet. thanks annonymous. i just installed a heatsink on the motor, see how it goes. as for the 4s setup, will just be doing a couple of speed runs on a flat surface. appreciate your help.

No real need for an esc fan

If you plan to run 3s just add heatsink / fan to motor and some holes in body for airflow

If you plan to run 4s add an external bec to the stock esc, will take away some of the heat

The toyz sells one that screws into existing fins on top of the stock esc heatsink

Heard good things about them and a great price, think I read somewhere once that they had same internal circuitry as more expensive models

I am currently running a Castle ccbec on my mamba max and it works well, like the ability to change output voltage with the link software

Ran the Dimension Engineering sportbec on the stock esc and it also worked well and didnt require cutting of wires etc...

I thought the stock BEC should be fine? It powers 4 LED's for me without any issue...with 2 high power driving light...

ESC has a bec (battery eliminator circuit) built in which provides 6v to the reciever to power it and the servo

In order to provide the 6v output (from 11.1 or 14.8v input) heat is produced inside the ESC

Adding an external bec ($20 or so) alleviates some of the heat and makes a noticeable difference

Easy if you know how to solder

One end gets connected to positive and negative battery connector other end gets plugged into your reciever

Thanks crusey. appreciate the replies. just a couple more questions. Onced the BEC is installed, does it work automatically? I'm planning to get the ******* bec. And also, will it reduce the overall heat, not just for the 4S? What I mean is, for example I'm running a 3s and the merv thermals in 15mins, if i install the bec will the rumtime increase a little before it thermals? i hope i'm making sense.

    cheers again

Yeah once bec is installed there is nothing further to do

It will take some load off the esc even when running 2s or 3s

I ran the stock esc with the DE sportbec for a few months, running 3s/4s, tarmac bashing, geared 23/55 and never had heat issues with the esc or stock motor

    Cheers
