The modern pencil(core with a wood holder) dates back to the early 1600's and has always contained a graphite core. When graphite was first discovered it was called black lead and the terminology carried over to the marketing of black lead pencils.
I tried being reasonable, I didn't like it.

The large and medium flat rate boxes have a 70lb weight limit. As dense as lead is, I could see 50 lbs fitting in there.

WHAT????? That doesnt make any sense.

Rustler Racer, many people who do civil war re-enactments will use the lead for making musket balls and the sort, and they use a lot (not during the actual re-enactment of course). They use the balls for target shooting competitions while everyone is gathered together.

wow 50lbs for $10 plus shipping! I use lead weight for fishing weights. But I also get mine for free because I work at a dealership and they give me all of their used lead weights used for balanceing tires.

PyroRc, depending on what your using it for and how much you need, contact your local delearships and see if they'll give you their old lead weight for balancing tires. Otherwise they'll probably just throw them in the trash.

I got 112lbs of used wheel weights from a local tire shop (Tire Kingdom) for nothing except a thank you.

Melted it down, strained the steel and ended up with about 100lbs.

    It never hurts to ask.

Yeah I don't think that you are allowed to just throw lead out since it's considered toxic, which is why they are more than willing to give it to you.

I don't know if places are allowed to throw lead weights away or not, but I know the dealership I work for and its sister companys, which all are very large, simply toss the weights because it is easiest. And with as many tire's they balance a week, I'm sure they probably could fill a 5 gallon bucket every two weeks. And your probably right, thats why they are willing to give it away.

I buy and collect lead all the time. That is a good price for the above 50 Lbs. I melt it down add some antimony and tin to harden it up and cast my own Bullets with it.
If you bought it a Big Truck brought it

please, please don't do that. that puts lead into our water and that is how food supply is contaminated. . try to get all the lead and take it to a place to be recycled.

well IDK about you but i dont want lead poisoning thank you
you can eat the lead, i dont care. but we cant prevent food contamination if people just do things like that, then others who did nothing suffer.
besides that, i could care less if people (or you) seasoned their food with it but thats their choice if they want that

if you need lead. sometimes you can go to a tire and wheel shop they save the old tire weights in a bucket or whatnot, last time i need some lead i went to a tire/wheel shop they gave me a 5 gallon bucket full to the top with wheel weights.just had to melt it down.

and anyways, you can always recycle the lead weights, you can't always pull every bit of lead out of the ocean

To throw this thread even more off topic....haha

Occupational lead poisoning is one of the most common ways adults get lead poisoning. And lead based paint is more of a problem then lead in the water. (hence all the toys made in china that were recalled because of the lead based paint that was used) To get lead poisoning from water you would need to drink a lot of water that was saturated with lead.

I found this on a health forum thought you might find it interesting brushlessbandit.
People get exposed to lead in numerous ways. Lead is present in household dust, bare soil, air, drinking water, food, hair dyes, home remedies, ceramics and various other cosmetic products. However, the most prominent source of lead poisoning is the lead-based paint. People working in lead mines have the heaviest exposure to lead. Lead poisoning can occur through the water coming from old plumbing fixtures with lead soldering and imported food cans with lead soldering.
sorry to throw this thread even more off topic...
