Are the horror stories true?

Ok so I hear all these stories about Titans frying after just a few runs. Are they really that bad? I had an old school E-Maxx a few years back and it was slow (by my standards) but as long as I kept the motors cleaned and oiled I never had any issues, in fact the guy that owns the truck now is still running those same motors. So are the E-Revo Titans the same motors or is Traxxas using a different motor now with the same label. I mostly race but may start bashing again too now that I won't be paying $35+ / gallon of fuel. Anyway realistically how long do these motors last on average or should I go ahead and order an ezrun now? I was expecting the truck to get here today so maybe tomorrow.

Hi, well yes most of those stories are true! BUT most are forgetting to include that for those few runs, they were running LIPOS (For stock E Revo with the two Titans 550s, you can only run two 2s Lipos to eual 4s Lipos with a lipo cut-off) and after 3 ro so runs, the 550s are finished. I KNOW IT HAPPENED TO ME!!! But if you run 7 cells NiMh and maintain the Titans after every run, you know cleaning, oiling - brushed maintenance, odds are you will have them a long time!

E-REVOdreamer no problem at all bud. Just trying to get some info from others I know nitro Revos inside and out but the E version I'm not familiar with and i have heard many people talk about burning up the titans in under 10 runs. Thank you Ray00Ray that's what I wanted to hear well kinda I was gonna run nimhs for now but upgrade to 4s asap.

the ones in it are newly replaced with one run on them...so they should be fine

Mine fried after 6 runs, my buddies after 5. BUT we are both running lipos, and I'm sure thats the cause. When the titans gets all the power they want they simply cant take it..

Well I was gonna order 2 chargers when I ordered my Lipos but I think I'm gonna settle for 1 charger (for now) and go ahead and start saving up for the ezrun just to be on the safe side. I'm sooooo anxious I hope this thing shows up today I swear I get 20 years younger everytime I have to wait for a truck to come in like a kid on christmas eve then when it does I get that 20 years back and then some lol.

I ran mine first with NIMH and then with LIPOs and never had a lick of trouble. But I was also careful to gear conservatively and not do long runs. The Lipos don't fry the titans faster...but since they give longer runtime, people run them longer and fry them that way. So, you've just got to be careful how long you run. Oh, I also cut a hole in my windshield and in the back of the body to get the air to flow over the Titans. I've since gone brushless, but my Titans were still in perfect working order when I pulled them out. And they probably had 20 runs on them...including a few races.

Oh, and use motor spray on them after each run.

I think the theory is that a new motor has brushes that are not the same shape as the commutator they contact, this causes a small contact area and increases arcing between the brushes and commutator when the motor is under load resulting in excessive wear, combine this with extreamly long run times of a LiPo battery and I think this is the problem.

I have not heard of any troubles from people who have correctly run in their motors (Doesn't mean it hasn't happened, I just havent had it happen)

In saying that I have a summit and have not run in my motor, and it is still going strong.

man, ive run my titan 50 times and only died through lack of cleaning. but when they are that cheap its not a huge issue is it?

So you guys wouldn't suggest going Lipo until you upgrade the motor? I just got my E-Revo brand new stock and I've got really cheap batteries. i want to upgrade but I don't have the cash to be buying a motor, so what is the top of the line I could run without burning out the Titans?

I would suggest going ahead and running LiPos. Just don't do crazy long runs just because your LiPos last longer. Make sure you use motor spray every now and then. And, of course, make sure you only get 2s lipos.

I ran mine with Lipos for quite a while and never had any issue at all. I even raced with my titans/lipos. No problems whatsoever. You shouldn't need to upgrade motors, in my opinion. Unless you upgrade to brushless.

I'd like to ask Aubrey what he thinks constitutes a crazy long run as my Titan 550's fried after about 10 minutes. Twice! From the variation of opinion on this thread, I can only assume that Traxxas have changed the design of their Titan 550 motor.
