    Leaking oil from engine, messy!!!

    Hey,

    I am having a stange issue with oil leaking from the bottom of my engine. I have searched through the forum threads on this and it seems that loose bolts are to blame, but I have tightened everything on the engine including the ezstart, and it still leaks this oil substance.

    I'm really not sure where this is coming from, has anyone else had this problem? Could it be a seal or o-ring somewhere? It doesn't seem to be affecting performance, its just messy and annoying! Any help is appreciated.

    I'm also have intermittent issues with once the car is warm, coming off WOT it will stall. I can pick the car up and gun the throttle and it doesn't stall. Put it back on the ground and sure enough after WOT it will stall again. It will then suddenly go away again. Weird!!

    replace your backplate o-ring that seal the engine.

    is it just at the back that is leaking and not at the flywheel area?
    and
    are you using too much ARO?

    OK, I will try and replace that. I don't use ARO as such, been using WD40 and I'm pretty sparing with that. I think I have seen it coming from the flywheel area too, is there an o-ring in this location too?

    no,,, there's no o-ring at the flywheel area...

    you got leaks on both ends of the engine...

    you need to replace the backplate o-ring and the bearing on the front.
    and don't use too much wd40.

    Also make sure your backplate is tight. Another thing to check is the fit of the starter shaft through the bushing. If this has worn you may be leaking from there. I would guess if its coming out of the flywheel its to much WD40 or as above, you need to check the bearings.

    As for your WOT problem, if its not your tune check to make sure your clutch is ok.

    thanks chaps, I will do a bit of disassembly! It's anoying as I've not even put 3/4 of a gallon through it yet!!!

    I'm not sure about temps as I don't have a temp gun yet. I am rich if anything as I always make sure I am running with a nice blue smoke trail.

    my LHS says if no temp gun is available, put a drop of saliva on one of the top three cooling fins of the 3.3, count 1 1000 2 1000 . .. 7 1000, if @ 7 seconds the saliva has not boiled off your running fine if by 10 seconds its still sitting there your too rich.

    any one else use this trick ? or are my LHS idiota's again ?

    I'll do the spit test every once in a while...except I do it on the glow plug.

    As far as the leaks....are you getting a line slung around the inside from the flywheel area? These engines will leak some... Is the fuel tank lid leaking any or did you spill any fuel when you refueled???

    A rich tune will also make them leak more than normal...

    I am getting a line slung around from behind the flywheel, this is where most of it comes from. I do also get some gather around the bottom of the ezstart casing. I took it apart last night and everything seemed OK. I replaced the o-ring on the backplate and the header. I took it out today and it still leaks. I will just put it down to being a very leaky engine as you said shawnp :-(

    Incidently the problem with the stalling was really bad today, I checked the clutch all OK and I reset the tune back to Factory and it was still doing it. I was about to give up and it suddenly started running fine. Very annoying!!!!

    If its slinging a line around the flywheel then you have a front bearing leak. Check out eBay... You can pickup a brand new cranckcase with bearings for about $20. And the stalling would be an indication its lean....most likely from the front bearing....

    Mine looks exactly like yours underneath and mine is fresh outta the box, never been raced. I guess its just like that.......

    well, upon further inspection of your pics, its not messy / dirty looking oily residue, but its a clear greasy looking substance.

    Just an update, I've found the source of the oil leak!

    I was getting sick of it so I took the engine out and checked for air leaks. It was solid all over except for around one of engine mounts. There is a crack around the mount and air was pouring out of it, so this must be where the oil is coming from!

    I need to go and buy some gasket sealant to try and plug the hole.

    With the crankcase cracked like that you would be better off pickung a new one up. They can be had on eBay for about $20 shipped with bearings and all...

    I think thats the worst air leak I have ever seen...get a new crankcase or ERP...
    R/C is expensive...

    Or it’s a great excuse to get an upgraded engine. I just ride that engine out unless it gives you performance issues.

    Another Update!

    I sealed up the hole with the gasket sealant, and whilst I was at it checked for more air leaks and found two more. The front bearing around the crankshaft and from the rubber boot around low speed needle. I sealed the boot up with super glue and put an o-ring over the crankshaft in front of the bearing.

    Wow! The engine has never run so well, goes like a train! I am very pleased :-)

    im having the same problem but i dont know where its coming from, mine isnt as messy as that though. every time i pick my truck up there is a little oil right under where the engine is and diff..

    i pulled my diff and took the cup apart and the x-ring was torn dont know how, anyways there was little oil in the diff so i just put this putty kind of stuff in it. well i thought it was that, then i pick my truck up again and there was more oil on the floor..
