MMM can run brushed motors. See page 11 of the user manual:Originally Posted by zrau17

Guess there's no reason not to use the 18V motor. I don't imagine there's any advantage though.
What about max speed? Well, nowhere near as fast as brushless. The DeWalt mod is pretty reliable, waterproof and far cheaper than a brushless set-up. Depending on gearing I would expect you could get 30mph. Probably not much more.
if you going to use an 18v dewalt in a esc designed for 16.8 volt, your under volting the motor and wasting your timeOriginally Posted by ilarios
if you fireup google and search this site theres plenty of info on dewalt motors
from what i heave read and learnt about the dewalt motors in the past few months of scouring the net is the 12 v motors are the way to go. they also when over volted produce more torque/rpms then then 14.4 volt dewalt as well
Dewalt 18v is about 1100kv. 14v is about 1350kv. 12v is about 1650kv. If you run the numbers you will see the 12v is the best choice for power and speed. The others are slower and less powerful for the same voltage.
Only time a 14v would make sense is if you want to run 5s lipo all the time. The 12v will handle 5s, but it wears the brushes much faster.
cubsfan , where did you find the dewalt numbers? Ive been searching for them but noone has concrete numbers comparing the differences in the 14 vs 12

Subscribed. Interesting to hear. I might have to try this.
Gearing Dewalt Motor
Erevo Bushed by Dewalt 14.4
Stock 16.8 ESC
Just wanted to give my input. With the cost of gears being under $10, I have tried lots and wanted to give my input on what I find to be the best gearing on the Dewalt 14.4V motor on a 1:10 E-Revo which I found to be 24T/54T.
What we can all be assured of is that the Dewalt has CRAZY torque. However the thing that it is missing is the high end speed.
My brother owns the brushless version however is always replacing the ESC because it gets wet and since we live in rainy **** Washington State, I didn't want to spend $300 to get brushless and then not be able to drive when it is wet outside. By the way, a wet street is super fun if you're not scared of water damage.
So after doing much research I went with the Dewalt 12V motor. Yes it got way too hot and ended up smoking two of them before I did much more research and am now very very happy with the much much cooler running 14.4V Dewalt motor.
The one thing that I was not happy about is how much faster my brothers brushless erevo was over mine. I did much more research and ended up with the following setup that got my Dewalt motor to (almost) match the speed of his brushless setup. Still has crazy torque and is fully waterproof still.
Dewalt 14.4V Motor model number: 396505-21. $30
Robinson Racing 8724. XHard 24T 0.8Mod 5mm Bore Pinion Gear. $10
Traxxas 3956. 54T Spur gear. $5
Maxpro MPR1003-3. 3S low voltage monitor. $8
Maxpro MPR1003-2. 2S low voltage monitor. $8
Of course there are many a lipo battery but I found these to be the best and most powerful from Got 2 Go RC. They are matching, just one has an extra cell.

Of course the part in question here will be the 24T pinion but that was the key gear in getting the speed up and hasn't gotten the motor or ESC hot. Just had to do a little work with my Dremel to remove the stock dewalt pinion and also to widen the screw slot for the motor mount so that the gears would mesh up. Been running this setup for a bit now and not have any problems with overheating.
I've been eyeing my Dewalt drill with thoughts of dismemberment!
How did that sort of gearing hold up? I would assume that your motor would have burnt up and been super hot...
I have heard of people running 21/68 gearing complaining about heat and burning up the motor, so I cant imagine how bad 24/54 would be?
An update would be awesome.
