    got an extra 3.3 today..........

bought a fairly new 3.3 for my slayer today, from a friend who was having trouble getting it to run decent, went through it,found nothing but the blue carb boot pulled back(obviously was leaking), you guys think that was it? after searching all old threads, everyone seems to agree carb boots sealing are very important..........

i've been pondering on that thought of doing it. but i believe it would kill the ERP deal. if you sent that motor back with it ported and such they may make you buy one full price. i dunno tho. here's a link i found today about it.

read that whole article, even though ive been a mechanic for over 20 years,i think i would need to practice on two or three worn out sleeves and cranks, before i attempted an expensive new one.........

i've done alot of port and polish jobs on various motors but not an RC. my last project was an ebay stock carb for my 400EX and wow. did a polish job and took all the ruff sharp spots out of the inside of the carb and i could definately tell a difference. i did have to run it richer than the other stock carb. i would say i at least got a 5-7hp gain.

its a little different in a dealership, you never do anything remotely like that, ive ported briggs engines for racing before, but these r/c,s are a little intimidating to me as for as that goes.........

that link i found makes it sound easy. that's what i've mostly ported also. my briggs flathead WKA engines.

it shouldn't be hard to cut since the sleeve's made from brass so it should dremel pretty good. plus brass will polish to a mirror shine.

ha ha,when i first started i went to the wka office at charlotte motor speedway, built my first limited modified engine by the rulebook and got majorly spanked by everyone, tech guy said,"did you port your intake and exhaust ports" (rule book said no porting allowed),in other words EVERYONE WAS CHEATING BUT ME...........

yeah there's alot of "read between the lines" games that everyone plays. the last 3 years i've been running the WKA briggs animal class over at Lawrenceberg IN and have taken 2 track championships out of 3 years and tied in points for the middle year but didn't have enough feature wins. now that class has pretty much died. no one around here is running it anymore.

over at rc universe there is a post I read couple of days back that explains exactly how to do it as per the rc car action magazine article. I'll see if I can difg up the link. if you need practice materials, I have a huge bin of old engines that are either seizde up , broken, etc. I was going to start practicing on the DOAs and then do a port job on the associated engine I am replacing on my TC3, if that goes well then I'll start doing it to nay of my others given they aren't an os or other aftermarket that is not advised to do this to.

One of the important things the article pointed out is that some engines like os will only stand to gain next to nothing as they are shipped pretty much maxed out.

Traxxas engine I hear are good to do this to though, but you do void your eligibility to return it for a half off replacement when you port it. they recommend you keep a spare...

i was thinking since the ERP would cost you a little over $100. you could rebuild the motor for that unless you absolutely grenade it.

i dont think my lhs checks the cores they get when you erp, what difference does it make anyway,if you ran it without an air cleaner you can erp it, thats dumber than porting,i thought erp was" no questions asked".........

that's what i was thinking also...... but who knows. i'm sure they've got a fine print about it somewhere but i could be wrong.

i would think it would void it b/c they would take it apart and say well you modded the sleeve and crank and that caused it to blow up or what ever and make you pay more for ERP. but still i could be wrong.

i guess the only way to find out would be to call Traxxas up and ask about it.
