    Broke diff out put shaft

I have not seen this break yet. Hope this does not become a trend.
Had the truck for about a week and this was on second run with it. I called Traxxas for the replacement and its on the way but they refused to send the diff lube.

Traxxas may need to get on top of these issues. $500 trucks should last a bit longer than a week.

Traxxas said that there was a small batch of Summits was a defective axel shafts and they will replace them. Most people have great luck with Summits.

    Well how about that.

    Great pics.

So, I was just out in my front yard doing some minor bashing when all of a sudden things weren't the same (no other way to explain it) so I figured let me see what is going on. I picked up the truck and gave it some "gas" and only three wheels moved. Huhh, is this the infamous diff part breakage that I've been reading about? Let me through the diff locks on, same thing, only three wheels moving. Weird. Still not sure I'm thinking that's the issue and keep running the truck.

Batteries die so I bring it inside and call Traxxas, I looked up their number on here and saw this tread so I clicked on it really quick, eww odd, that sucks for the OP. Anyway, make my call and go back to look at the Summit and start pulling on the front left axle, and low and behold the whole thing comes out, just like the pics above and I mean exactly.

The Traxxas rep comes on the line and I tell him, I think I had one issue but now have another and ask if he has access to this site, yes he does, I asked him to check it out but since it's late and they're getting ready to close he suggested I tear apart the truck and make sure nothing else is broken and call them back on Monday. I said ok, I understand, fine.

So, not only am I stuck to Monday now but who knows how long before I get a new part and things back together. This is going to suck!!!

I'm ok with that though, these things happen.

Funny thing is I've only had my Summit exactly one week today and broke the exact part.

    Grrrr, the wait begins.

Anyway, OP, yes, I've seen this before.

Hmmm so does that mean ALL the pinion gear in the new summit are prone to breaking ?

BTW the part number for these are 5382X

Maybe Traxxas should send all three when a cust has to open up the diff to replace one. I sure will hate to keep opening the diff as they all break one by one.

The part number for mine is 5678

It's the driver side front that broke on mine.

If it was the passengers side front I believe it would be 5382x

ETA: With that being said, I've only seen part number 5678 being an issue so far and if that's the case don't see the need to replace all three.

So did you break the input or output shaft ?
My break was at the output side.

Part 5678 is what I broke.

It's the small shaft with a gear on the inside end that comes out of the front diff to the driver's side front axle.

    ETA:

Looks like you were passengers side rear?

I broke the rear diff. I will get it all apart once the Kids go to bed and take some more pics. If they help I am sure to lose parts.

Well you guys where right...5678. I thinking it was the other side which would have been 5382. My problem was I only had the revo parts diagram and it showed that number for left and right. I guess I will call Traxxas Monday and get the correct one sent. Maybe this time I can get them to send the diff fluid also.

Sorry it broke, and you have to go though the whole process, but on the bright side your pics are amazing!!

What kind of camera are you using?

Just to be clear and I'm not sure this matters but my diffs were not locked when my part 5678 broke.

I went back and read the thread by lcbrink again and it looks like most were locked when their parts broke.

Does your rear differential seem loose inside the rear bulkhead?

Mine moves a lot inside the bulkhead and the front one doesn't!

I'm guessing if that could be one of the problems...

Shocking, I broke my front diff on the first crawl. The right side broke on mine, 5678. Traxxas had me a new one in less than 48 hrs. Its back together, but I havent bashed it yet.

    broke diff

I broke 5678 yesterday, with diff unlocked. My diff broke at exactly the same spot or depth of the pictures above. I called yesterday (friday) and customer service said it would be here (Brawley, CA) Monday. They also said they were sending some diff lube free. I asked if the other diffs were going to break and the guy said only part #5678 was made defective. I sure don't want to have each diff break one at a time.

I asked for diff lube from the Traxxas Rep on Friday and he told me no.

I just got off the phone with Traxxas and have a part 5678 and some diff lube on the way.

I asked him if he could send two replacement parts for when the next one breaks and in a nice way he said no.

So it's really going to suck if I break the rear diff now and then have to wait all over again but oh well.

Has anyone broken both the front and rear yet?

I broke both of them. The first one was with 60 min on the Summit, the second was after another 30 min. I'm glad that they are happy to ship the replacement parts, learning how to disassemble the Summit was cool, but the downtime and labor taking it apart and waiting sucks.

Yep, that's what makes me mad about them not sending me out two. So now I have to wait until the other one breaks and then be down again waiting for several days for the part to arrive.

Or, maybe I can call once I get this one in and the truck back up and running and tell them the back one broke????

I hate seeing all these broken diffs. Am I not rough enough? Not that I'm going to go out and purposely break it but I'm intrested to know how they are breaking.

Is it after a bad landing from a jump? Doing donuts? Locked, Unlocked? High gear, Low Gear?

I was in high gear without diffs locked for sure but since I'm not exactly sure when mine broke I can only guess and that was just running around in the yard trying to do forward and reverse wheelies. So from a stand still, hard and fast on the gas both forward and reverse. Now, one of the things I may have been doing when this happened was going in reverse slowly and then into forward quickly to pull the front off the ground.

So IMHO, nothing too rough was going on but I guess it was enough.

Maybe you got lucky and got one without the bad parts.

Hopefully. I really do hope it's only bad parts and not a design flaw. Guess I'll wait and see.

For the front dif I was in Low dif's locked climbing a dirt hill next to the rock crawling course at my local track. The rear dif I broke in High no locked dif's, I was trying to see how fast it was from a stand still and snap it broke.

I think it is only the part. I have done some pretty nasty stuff to mine, and it has held up amazingly well... There are hundreds, if not thousands that have been running fine.

The one I thought broke my front diff for sure was when I was running it in the snow. It was 14F out, and a good 8 inches of snow. I found that if I kept it at full throttle it would skim over the top layer of ice without digging in.

Anyway, I had gloves on, naturally, and it was going full speed, when I tried to make a hard right turn in front of this huge tree. Well, when I turned the transmitter, my middle finger(it was longer then normal because of the gloves!) engaged the front diff. lock, which increased the turning radius, and I slammed full speed into the tree!!!

I snapped the bumper, bumper mount, the front body posts support structure thing in a few different places, and the front skid plate. I think the damage was so extensive because it was so cold out, and the way the I hit dead center.

But at least I saved the A-arms, and driveshafts!! Oh, and the front diff. was fine, amazingly!!!!

Anyway, I think it is just a bad batch of a hundred or less. Nothing more. These things happen... And I think Traxxas has handle it well, besides not giving the diff. fluid for free!!!

broke the same part in mine. front diff was locked (unknown to me) in high gear. after crawling on the neighbors rock wall i decided to make a speed run down the street. down the street was fine, on the return the truck lurched off to the left. i stopped to inspect it to find that one wheel was not spinning under power. i ordered the part from my lhs, and bought a diff off of ebay. that way i can have an entire spare diff laying around in case this happens again.

Samething happened to mine after third day, but I was pretty hard on it. Had diffs locked in both low and high ripping through snow. But it seemed to break when I was in full lock in low while rock crawling, atleast that is when I noticed it. Called Traxxas and a new part is on the way, also ordered one from my local hobby shop.
But all in all this seems like a great truck.

    My first run

I got mine and my sons Summits out today for the first time. Mine proceeded to almost immediatly break the right rear axle into the rear diff and about 20 min. later my sons broke the right front (same end into front diff). I can assume this is a factory defect.
Anyone else seen a thread on this?
I'll try to send these pics to Traxxas.

These shots are of my rear axle but my sons looks identical in failure.

    Mike
