    More low-end proportional control?

I was wondering if there's any way to get some more low-end proportional control for crawling... currently, even in low gear, the minimum speed that the Summit will start moving is a bit fast... there's travel on the throttle control, it's just that it seems to be ignored as part of neutral.

You could try switching it from 50/50 to 70/30. That should give you more throttle to play with. You may need to reprogram the ESC though...

I think first gear is geared too high for crawling.
I hope to look into lowering the gear ratio at some point.

Another option is to get a programmable speed control where you can define throttle response. That and the addition of drag brake would be really helpful for crawling!

How about changing the spur gear?

Well, the 70/30 setting does seem to help - it adds at least one or two speeds BELOW the 50/50's minimum, although the minimum reverse speed is now a lot higher.
