The Problems With Being Impatient......

You know when you do something wrong and you start cursing at your misfortunes, well I've been there this weekend. I replaced my front bearings and put the mill back together, all the time "KNOWING" I was doing it right (done it a few times and now do not need the instructions ) and did not check the piston position. When I take things apart I always place items on the bench in the way they are to go back. Well I should of double checked as I put the piston around the wrong way

I have been unable to run it in the last fortnight due to the weather and family commitments and finely had time to play today. Well, got it fueled up, glow igniter on and started to tug away at the pull start. She fired up with a bit of throttle and run great till I let off the throttle to go down to idle. I could not get her to idle at all. After a while of pulling and going over my settings realised what I may had done wrong. After another break down, I found my piston around the wrong way.

Well that was where my impatience to get the truck running came to play, I pushed the sleeve in to fast and hard and check the following Pic I was gutted and now have to wait up to 10 days to get a new sleeve and piston. Then it's break in period before I can really play, again I'm gutted at myself

The 3.3, I'm starting to wonder if it just had a weak casting on that particular side.

Tell me about it, the exchange rate is gonna kill me. Though it is cheaper to get off eBay than what is is to buy local...........$167.90 piston and sleeve, and if I want to get another rod add $60.90 . Will be around NZ $100 delivered to my door from the states

How much does that translate into US dollars? I have a brand new 3.3 engine that I paid $120 for that I could sell you if it's cheaper for you to go that route. I don't know how much shipping is, but I would guess maybe $10 or so.

To get a new piston and sleeve delivered works out to be around $90 NZ dollars, $60US. The exchange rate is a killer but still cheaper than paying $167 + freight here. Thanks for giving us the option, if it was for your .21tm then I would of jumped at it

Ah no mate! Thats just serious bad luck!!!
I could bring you a piston and sleeve from the UK when I come back home in about 3 weeks . Only prob is the exchange rate to pounds...

Anyway, hope you get the truck sorted soon! And good luck with the sick daughter. I'm just about off to bed now. Took me 38 hours from NZ to the UK .

Sorry to hear about that, these things have no mercy when you do not pay attention to detail IMHO....

Man I would have thought it would be a bear to get started with the piston not facing the correct way, also the oil hole on the conrod, I take it that was also backwards since it was put together on the bench and went in with the piston....

Give that thing a good bath of WD-40 and compressed air to make sure you have any little particles of metal out of the case....

Cheers for the advise, I have already given it its full clean down with a litre of DA with compressed air and then a soak of WD-40 for storage.

Afterwards I couldn't believe how easy it was to start aswell, primed up the fuel and gave my normal 3-5 tugs and nothing, gave half throttle on the transmitter and x2 more tugs latter it blurpt to life and sounded great till I let of the gas and she stalled (no fuel ). Did this for a while, changing settings on carb, checking idle gap etc..... then stood back to give the mind a break and that's when it hit me, "did I" install something wrong, maybe it was the piston...........YEP

That certainly was one of my moments. All in all, what a great learning experience. By the way you can get cheap rebuild kits on eBay, $50US for piston, sleeve and rod.

You know when you install the piston backwards, the engine it isn't broken in that way. The engine could loose some compression when you go back and install it right.

Correct. You won't get that 10 gallons out of it that's for sure

If the sleeve isn't scratched, I would just smooth the broken edge of the piston, and run it....

LOL, I'd like to see you try that...

I am pretty sure it would be near impossible to tune the engine if you Overkill were to smooth the edge of the piston, reassemble the engine, and try and run it. I wonder if it would mess with the timing of the engine as well...

I don't see how the engine would be affected, the motor would be in the compression bit when the broken part of the sleeve reaches the ports.

I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on. I'll run it till my new piston and sleeve arrives. It's pretty much a dead mill now but no extra harm in trying

Put her all together and gave her a blast up and down the street tonight. Gave it a quick retune and she held it pretty well. I have a new P/S coming but I should of played dumb and told the wife it was knackered and a new mill was needed. I could of had my OS.21tm, as Homer would say, "Doh"

On a side note, I felt like a big kid showing off when I was blasting up and down the street. The nieghbours kids and their dads came out to have a look and give me some excellent compliments, LOL. Stroking the ego goes a long way, but that won't get them a drive like they wanted, ha ha One little lad said it sounded like an F1 race car, I had to agree

my 3.3 was like that and i cleaned it up and put it back together like normal and it ran even better and had more power exactly like that but it also went to higher rpms and the rod gave out so it didnt run after that
