    Traxxas steel drive shafts

I just put these on my Jato.

The instructions say to fill the diff with 30wt shock oil. They say thats whats in it from the factory. Does that sound right? Shouldn't I be adding diff oil? Does it make a difference?

Make tons of difference , 30wt in a diff is way too thin!

You can run 120k diff oil in the diff. even higher.

stock come w/ 30wt, if you run your Jato on-road most time, go for 50wt or thicker. if you like off-road bashing, go for 10wt or 20wt. The thinner fluid work great at getting the power to the ground on a variety of surfaces.
    My Jato use 10wt only...........I'm a heavy off-road basher!!!

But my question is, can I use shock oil in the diff instead of diff oil? Thats what the instructions say to do.

I put in 30wt shock oil in the diff. Is that ok or do I need diff oil?

the thinner the more the differential will slip....

the thicker will slip less thus turning the tiers more, more wheel spin.

Do those steel drive shafts put too much stress on the gears making it more likely to strip the trans gears?

No. I have run the traxxas CVD's with an AB modded .21TM and am AB drag modded Picco/JLR.12. Only a BB engine will have more tork than the modded .21TM and nothing has more rpm than the JLR.12 at 50K+ and my CVD's are in perfect shape. Less rotating mass and looks much better than the plastic.

don't mean to jack your thread.
I was looking into buying those traxxas cvd's. So this thread is very informative.

Im pretty sure 30wt shock oil is not the same as the 30k diff lube. Use the Diff oil
    2CH3NO2 + CH3OH + 3O2 → 3CO2 + 5H2O + N2 =Jato Fun

you are right they are not even close to the same...

30Kwt = 30,000wt oil... so as you can see 30Kwt oil is 1,000 times thicker than 30wt...

    EDIT:
just for comparison 30wt oil is thin, like regular motor oil...30Kwt oil is really thick, like the consistency of molasses...

Yes there is def a huge difference between the two and I would imagine that the shock oil would problably not do anything for the diff. (except maybe provide some sort of lubrication) I am running traxxas' 500,000wt diff fluid in my jato's. It pretty much allows the jato to have possi traction, ,meaning the rear wheels spin at the same rate and provide equal amounts of power to each tire no matter what conditions you are running in.

500k wow what surfaces you run? with the amount of power the jato puts down i would think anything less than 50k or 70 would be useless. That Jato just manditorily seems to break a driveline part or two every so often. Almost like scheduled maitenance. It comes with the territory.

I use 700,000 wt in my diff. It's thicker than cold honey.... It'll lock it up just right! The jato Diffs out to much to use low weight oil in the diff if you ask me. Over rough terrain it'll diff out so much you practically stop some of the time!
