    Yet another brake question, sorry

I know there are brake mods and tips all over the forum but I haven't been able to find what I am looking for........

Are there any brake shoes that would improve the Jato's stopping capability? I have tried the stock and carbon disk and although the carbon has made a difference I am still not happy with its performance. I am yet to try the graphite as it is out of stock so I started thinking is it possible to replace or mod the shoe's. In another forum a guy said he was going to try gluing some rubber on the insides of the shoe to see if that would improve things, has anybody tried that and had success?

I have been looking around the net and found some shoes for another model which do look similar to the Jato's, I think it was a Tmaxx, not 100% sure. The thing that caught my eye was they are steel or alloy with a fibre insert. To me that suggests it may offer a bit more grip on the disk than say a straight untreated shoe. I am guessing it wouldn't be a direct replacement so, does the size and shape of the shoe matter? My theory is, if it is bigger I may be able to cut it down a bit with a Dremmel and drill a couple of new holes to fit the existing mount. What do you think?

why are you still so concerned with your brakes? why do you need them to brake so profusely?... sorry for asking... what is your purpose with the Jato? not trying to be rude, just want to know why you want the brakes to be much much better...

Do the brake mods and get the golden horizons aluminum cam lever and you wont be able to stop any better after that.

look man , here is the bottom line.....
i dont know if u have ever driven a motorcyle or not but the theory is the same.
85 percent of ur brakin comes from the fron and the rear brake is really used to keep trackin correct (so the rear don't pass the front lol)
in the jato.... u only have back brakes....
even if u can lock them up tight... it will still not stop like a revo or any other 4 whhel drive vehicle....
in essence... it aint gonna get any better...........
    been there bought that

I too agree that it can only get so good...however you could try replacing your throttle/brake servo along with the other mods.

Do the fuel line/pen tube mod, replace your pads with the graphite ones, get the steel disc, put the springs on, tighten your screws like all the threads say, get the golden horizons cam/lever and replace the servo with a 2055. That is my exact setup and my brakes are very good. You will however have to re-adjust from time to time, as the heat from braking will shift things around.

And eventually I'm sure my disc or pads will wear out but that's the breaks!

The problem I have is the brakes don't stop it at all and I can't figure out why. I know its not going to stop on the spot but when the brakes are applied other than removing the power that is all it does and it freewheels to a stop. I don't know but would assume when I hit the brakes there should at least be some resistance to slow it.

I have dismantled the brake assembly, the shoes are not really worn and the disc is fine. I have what appears to be the Golden Horizons cam/lever, it certainly looks the same as pictured above and the servo is the 2055.

Maybe when my new shoes and disc arrive I will see an obvious problem but at the moment it seems if I want the brakes to apply it means it is slightly locked permanently which I know isn't right.

The best way to explain it is, if I make a 45 degree ramp with a piece of wood/tilted table etc and put the Jato at the top with the electrics on it will freewheel to the bottom which it is supposed to, do it again with the brakes applied and it does the same thing. Like I said above, I don't know if that is right but as there is minimal force behind it with the brakes on in this test I would assume it should hold itself at the top of the ramp or at least slowly roll down. The same applies on the ground, I can push it very easily on my carpet with brakes off and then on and there is no difference.

Well check the operation of all of the components, make sure the cam lever moves when you apply the brakes. check to see that the cam lever is not stripped and the cam block comes out to push on the brake pad. If the brake pads are too far apart they might not make enough contact to slow the truck. It sounds like the cam block is missing and not applying force to the pads.

I think you should post up some pix of what you have there, that might help diagnose the problem.

I think I have finally got it sorted. I dismantled it to compare with the exploded view and it looks to me like the screws are the wrong length. I think that is the reason why I had such little margin between the disc running free and it locking if I tightened it a fraction. The shoe springs also appeared to be extremely stiff, I have cut down another spring to the same size and put that in place and for a couple of runs last night it was stopping very well.
