Ok didn't someone have a trick to removing the paint from the rims to make black rims?

Use easy off oven cleaner. thats what I used. Put the entire wheel/tire in a ziplock back and spray for about 4-5 seconds directly on the rim, then seal the bag and let it set for about 15 mins. that will eat the finish off but not harm the rims.
I fly trucks.....not planes :-)
Just be careful using the oven cleaner, as that is some nasty stuff.
That said, I have used it (get the stuff in the yellow can), and it works very well. I restored some old RPM chrome wheels to like-new condition... just white, of course.

if you do the oven cleaner it will leave it white but then u can dye it black by using RIT dye

Thought someone on here said they were black after the oven cleaner???? Also will the oven cleaner hurt the tires?
FYI i found out 8yrs first week of having my rustler applied turtle wax chrome polished removed the finish off the wheels back to dyable condition

I have not used the oven cleaner with tires on. Not sure on that one, I would imagine it would eat away at the glue though.....Originally Posted by justa5o

Not unless the wheels were originally black.Originally Posted by justa5o

I've done this several times. The wheels have always been white nylon underneath.
You can also soak your wheels in bleach to remove chrome plating from plastic.
Will that ruin the tires? Im thinking about doing that tooOriginally Posted by SteveC2375

slash wheels - black plastic
As nitrorea asked, will the oven cleaner hurt the tires or the tire glue? Will the oven cleaner weaken the bond of the tire to the wheel?
not sure. i only tried it with the tire off

I would imagine that the oven cleaner would at least weaken the bond if not outright remove it. Also you'll need to find a way to plug the holes in the wheels to keep your foams safe.. probably easier to just remove the tires, strip the wheels, dye the wheels, then remount.

The first time I did it I used easy off...Kind of a hassle... The last time I did it I masked off the ring and spray painted the inner wheel... So far the paint has lasted longer than the chrome which is flaking now... I don't think I'll be bothering with the easy off again.
