If memory serves me, I think that was a R1 Yamaha motor or the GSX motor. Other place I saw some of that video said what motor was in it.

I saw a video where a smart car drag raced a ferrari 360 and won, is that possible? looks like the wheels are too small to grip the power needed to do that. LOL the stock smart car engine has 3 cylinders and 70 HP, less than some motorcycles!

If the video is real, then its not a stock smart car. Power to weight ratio is the key. You cram a 200hp I4 motorcyle engine in a 600lb car vs a 600hp in a 3800lb car.......you've got a race.

My old 1979 Honda Civic with a 1200cc 4 cylinder engine had less than 50hp. Classic VW beetles with 1600cc engines were in the 50hp range too. Back in the 80's a four cylinder car with over 100hp was considered powerful - and it usually required an engine with over 2 litres of displacement. Today's multivalve, fuel injected engines deliver more horsepower than turbocharged engines with the same displacement from 20 years ago. (torque however.......)

I think it would be cool if Mercedes sold the smart "for two" here in the US. It would make a great "around town" grocery getter. (if you don't eat a lot!)

By those numbers, the ferrari was not driven to its full potential. It can pull a 12.1 (rather than the mid 13's shown) when it is driven correctly. Not to mention that the smart car wasn't stock

I'm pretty sure the numbers are false, I don't see a tree or any trap timers. I am aware it could run faster, even my lightly modded Gen 4 Z28 ran 13.5@105 with a 2.1 60ft.

not really, mk1 golf gti, 1600cc engine, 115bhp stock...thing with the US is that, the 4 cylinder engine is a waste of time to most people and V8s were where its at......but us europeans, couldnt afford to run such beasts, and hence the hot hatch came out, like the GTi, the astra GTE, the XR2i and XR3i`s all had over 100bhp, and were ridculously quick....

and the 1600 vw engine put out 50-64bhp, depending on what car it was in, the 1600 beetle engine put out 50, where as the 1600 type 3 vw engine put out about 60bhp, as it was twin carbed

as for the smart car video....why would anyone do something that pointless? why spend all that money on it...dont get me wrong its quick in a straight line, aint quick around the corners...well i lie its quick around the corners when they tip over and roll down the road.....they are probably one of the most unsafest cars ever to take around any sort of bend at speed, they get wrritten off al the time and totalled because of this.....i wouldnt get in one if you payed me
that car will be completly useless on anything other than a drag track

Smart-based funny cars... now THERE'S and idea!! You'd need super-long wheelie bars to keep it from flipping over like a T-Maxx 3.3 though.

US spec. Mk1 GTI's had less than 100hp due to our emission regulations. European car makers tend to keep the "good stuff" for the home market and send the wheezers here. Europeans enjoy clean diesel technology with excellent fuel mileage and stump pulling torque, but Americans can't buy a Mk5 Jetta or Golf with a TDI engine.

Regardless of exact HP figures, my point was that a 70hp smart was no worse than many cars just a short time ago. In fact, because of its light weight, it probably isn't too bad around town.

my uncle had a clubman estate, i believe he ran a dog over with it......on another note, my dad had one of the quickest minis ever built back in the 70s
the interior, consisted of...one seat, a tacho, speedo, steering wheel, and gear stick lol......engine was a fully race tuned 1000cc oscelli race engine, had twin 40 webers on it, then got rid of it for twin choke nikkis(beautiful carbs) lumpy cam in it, would barely idle.....would beat most 911s lol

yeh arcee i see what your saying now, forgot about the whole american import scene with european cars, well lack off in spec wise.....but to be fair, all american cars from the mid 70s to late 80s were a bit....rubbish,due to the emission laws etc, lack of V8s with power, and the styling.....although there are a few 80s american cars i would buy , i do love american muscle mmmm
