Drivetrain upgrades for the boyz truck

    My truck is now as fast as I want it , SS5800 , 15/87 , IB4200.
His truck needs to catch up, we plan to keep his brushed ,and be competitive
for around the $200 mark, what combos ESC/Motor should we be considering ? p.s. we plan to do some real indoor racing this Winter,a place called Barnstormers in Chester NY. Here's a link if your interested. http://www.barnstormersrc.com/
    Thanks

spending $200 on brushed hopups is just a waste of money....spend $170 for the SS5800 refurb kit + $10 for an aluminum idler gear and call it a day.

or spend another $230 and get a mamba 5700 kit. But then his car will be faster than yours...lol

I agree with family77 just go brushless it is much easer and faster.

A 15-turn motor would surely keep it competitive, but I'd recommend the a 17-turn just because of run time and wear. I'd say a 17-turn Team Orion SV2 Pro BB, a 15-tooth pinion (with stock sized spur), and any speed control to handle it. The Traxxas XL-5, Novak XRS, etc, etc... You can get all that for under $100!

Tomorrow my LHS is going to cut the COM on our speed gems amber (no charge hehe ) and we will clean the motor , throw new brushes in, diddle the timing and bump up the pinion to the heat threshold of the XL1 ESC. The plan is to keep him happy for now then upgrade for Christmas. So would the Team Orion SV2 Pro BB 17T work with his existing XL1 ESC ( XL1 says it handles 17 T the motor in there now is 17T , no real heat issues). Then Christmas may well be a Mamba 5700 ( depending on other pending ebay sales of items useless to me). So will the Orion pBB17T/ XL1 hold up for 10-12 packs?

It should... Mine last over 30 runs on a set of brushes. So that's what... 30 times 15minutes I'd say... It used to be around 23 minutes before I over discharged my GP3700 packs . Note to self... Never run past the voltage drop again... The few times you do it are the times that kill you. At least they're still great packs! More punchy than my GP3300's. Just not as much MAH as they could have...

As mentioned, brushless is a much better route than brushed. The exception to this is racing. Since you mentioned the posibility of racing competitively, you'll want to check with your local track first. Not all tracks offer a brushless catagory (especially in the Novice class).
