We have a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 with a diesel and it has been the most reliable vehicle we've owned. The diesel rams tend to last longer than the gas engines but you could get 150,000 miles or more out of it before needing major work...that is providing you do the maintenance on time. you will hear all kinds of bad things about EVERY single truck made today but the majority of them are good vehicles and reliable if maintenance is done on time. also check out http://www.dodgeram.org for more information on the truck

I used to do aftermarket work on trucks and these were pretty popular. As far as I know they're pretty reliable trucks. With on 20k miles on it there should be plenty of life left in it. Is it 2WD or 4WD? Either way it's a good truck.

50k km is actually about 31k miles, but thats still very low mileage for a 98 model year, only about 8k miles per year (considering a 98 model can be bought this time in 97, and that the average mileage here is 12k-15k miles/year). I've never owned one, but a friend of mine has had one about that year, and loves it.
