    Some people

I went in to register for automotive classes today at my college and while standing in line I heard one of the most stupid things I have heard in awhile. The person ahead of me, which is also registering for auto classes, said that a car can get almost 28 more horsepower by running premium fuel. And to think I am going to have classes with this guy.

A couple of years ago I taught Automotive Technology at a local technical college. That is nothing - wait till you get into class and all you here are one or two people talking about the motor their buddy built. It will all be junkyard parts, put together in less than 2 hours, gets 30 miles to a gallon and can pull the front tires of the box chevy off of the ground...

All kidding aside - but I have heard things along those lines when I was teaching - you should enjoy the classes but do not get discouraged when you do more theory than hands on work.

Two guys were talking about their trucks at a table next to me in the break room at work. One of the guys mentions that he has two sets of rims/tires for his truck, a stock size set and a much larger set. Then he says, "The strange thing is... the bigger tires are actually lighter than the small ones."
The other guy says, "That is wierd, I wonder why that is?"
    The first guy responds....

"Because there's more air in them."

I almost died trying not to laugh out loud at that, but what's even funnier is that the 2nd guy then agreed that it made sense.
    Don't believe everything you think.

you can get 210Hp buy running premium fuel (in my dads case with his '92 super coupe)...The way how...

If you have been trying to run water... so in his case he must have a 28hp car...

I tend to say stuff like that...

i took shop class during high school and after high school.

The first week of automotive class, one guy said he took a 4 Cylinder board it 60 over and put two 4 Barrel Carbs on it with a huge racing cam, he said it was pumping out 1000 horse power

i never laughed so hard in my life! he said whats so funny? i said you he says why? your story about the 4 Cylinder no way you can get 1000 HP from a small engine like that.. and futher more if you boared it 60 over with the engine being so small the Cylider walls would be to thin and cause over heating. he said yea right me and my did it in our garage and he boarded the engine with a huge drill press.

Truth is that some cars can produce much more horsepower when run on premium fuel. One car I own runs much better with premium than regular unleaded because as soon as the computer senses any pinging from the cheap fuel, it backs off the ignition timing and boost pressure. (probably more than a 28 hp loss in this case) The other cars I own probably benefit a little, but not that much. (couple of horses I suppose)

In short, in a Viper - yes. In a Civic - no.

Any high compression engine can gain from higher octane gas. Some engines liike my dads friends mustan cant even run on pump gas because the compression is so high(15to1).

    it depends my car
    (1969 vw type3 fastback)
will run more efficent with a lot more power if i run higher octane expensive petrol but i cant afford that
normal everyday petrol it`ll run good
petrol from a petrol station close to me, it wont get past 30mph its that bad, i used it once, knowing that it was bad fuel, put a fivers worth into it, to get to a good petrol station, it burnt more throwing flames out the exhaust and backpopping a treat,
i find that my car prefers to run on shell fuels, ive tryed others and one of them, it ran good but it chucked flames out the backwhich is pretty cool but sometimes they travel back through the engine and throw flames out the carbs,
it is a known fact that older cars prefer to run on higher grades of fuel

ive heard stupid comments like these, i usually get the old "porsche motor bolts into a back off an aircooled vw" one, yes they do bolt straight onto the gearbox, but they dont fit in the engine bay lol

or every now and then i drive down to the "ricer cruises" for pure amusment factor, one of them was convinced, his 3 cylinder 1.2 with baked bean tin exhaust would beat my 4 cylinder 1641 big bore engine with twin carbs and an uprated cam shaft lol, i laughed at him, walked off got called some names because i wouldnt race him i wouldnt race him for the fact, it would of been street racing, which is a big no no, how ever i did put the back end out on my car when i left hte car park pulling off lol. some people are like "hello anyone in, you dont know what your talking about, a turbo of a fuel injection car, wouldnt work on your 1ltr normally aspirated engine"

The kid was talking about his Honda Accord. I agree that in cars that require premium it will give you more power, but just because the computer sinces the lower octane and backs off timing and what not to prevent premature detination. If a car can run regular unleaded then switching to premium will give you no gain in power.
