    Question question

Ok, I have been trying to get my friends 4-tec (2.5) running right, but I just cant get it. When I push the gas it kills, and when I am able to make it go without killing, it wont stop. and when it kills it always sounds the same so I cant tell if its lean or rich. What do you think I should try?

you should try and set all needles to factory settings.
High Speed Needle: 4 turns out
Low Speed Needle: Set flush with the grey sleeve thats around the needle.
Try that and go from there.

I just tryed, and its still not workin. I can get it to work if I give it a lot of gas, but I cant get the lsn set right. It seems to be running hot, but if I richen it up a little it will only idle for a little bit and kill.

can you explain it better as what happens fully. need more details. you can't set the low speed until you set the high speed. kinda sounds like an air leak!

ok well I messed around with the settings and got it to idle, but when I push the gas a little it always kills (i can only get it to run when its real lean). then when I do get it to run a little, it wont idle and it doesnt run well goin slow.
so I have to pull it about half way and from there it runs ok.

but now the OWB is slipping and I cant get it to stop

(sorry, im not that good at explaining it)

How old is the engine? Sounds like it could be time for a rebuild.

a traxxas carby oring kit is extremely cheap and well worth fitting.. it even comes with little brass tubes to slide the new orings onto the lsn/hsn easily with, so they dont get cut up sliding over the needle's threads.
make sure you do both the oring around the carb base, and also the one thats in the engine block where the carb slides in..

my mates 4tec pro 2.5 has run great for almost 20litres (5gal) and recently without any prior symptoms started running real freaky, and nothing i tried would fix it..

i suggested an oring kit and he reluctantly agreed, and after i fitted them it started easier than ever, and ran like a champ again with nothing more than a slight lsn/hsn tweak..

    best $5 he ever spent

Put a new glow plug in it, set it back to factory settings and tune from there. Adjust the HSN first till you can get it to run. If it's bogging out when you give it gas, it sounds like the HSN is too rich but a new plug might fix that problem.

yea, I just got in from tryin again. this time I got it to run ok, it didnt try to move if I didnt push the gas and it didnt kill when I did. but after a little bit I stopped to look it over and there was smoke coming from the cooling head. so I guess if I richen it up a little it should still run ok (and shouldnt over heat).
I think it might need a rebuild. but I dont think he would want to spend the money for it. so I might give him the .15 im not useing from my nitro sport, what would I need to get that workin on it?

before you give up on it totally, give this "resizing" trick a go.. you've got nothing to lose right? i showed it to a friend to try, and i was surprised to see his engine burst back to life and run like there never was a problem..

your mates engine is still starting, so that alone is a good sign..

DIY sleeve resizing, from the Maxx forum.

i would also slap a carb oring kit in it anyway since they are only 3 or 4 bucks, and if he still cant get it to work he has a good 2.5 carb as a spare (about $50 value new i beleive?)

hose clamp for resize mod $1.50
    carb oring kit $4 (approx)
seeing his face light up when his car bursts back to life - priceless
