    Parents and driving...*UGH*

I've been driving fairly well, I took a trip to a nearby "city" (riiight) today to get my dads xrays from the hospital. He's telling me the complete obvious and completely distracting me.

For example. I'm trying to park. He's flailing his arms around trying to show me what to do, when i already know what to do. He confused me so much i had to wait like 2 minutes to figure out what i was doing, but I knew it BEFORE that.

It got kinda windy and he was pushing me to go 55, as opposed to the nice comfortable 50 i was doing. So the wind was blowing the astro all over the place, and i kept having to make adjustments to stay on the road. I'm not that experienced so it was kinda choppy. So, someone passes me and flips me off. "they flipped you off", followed by "they shouldnt flip you off". DUH. How is this not completely obvious? What does this have to do with driving?

Then, my mom doesn't even want me out of parking lots. I'm 18 and she doesn't even like me riding my bicycle! So, basically, I can't drive with either of them really, but i have to.

And this is completely ignoring the fact that the van felt great with the newly recharged ac, but dad has a problem with it because you don't get frost bite from putting your hand on the vent.

Not even riding your bike your mom dosn't feel safe with you even doing that???? WOW. At least look on the bright side she cares about your well being. Just take it one step at a time when i drive (just got my permit) my mother takes me out and really has no problem i found it funny that she was eating my first time in the car and could only come up with "your doing great". Of course she was watching.... Just tell your dad to chill out... and you no what to do and tell him its confusing you. Any ways im just mumbling on, good luck to you stay safe and have fun.

NEWDUCK: Couldn't afford drivers ed, don't need drivers ed after you're 18.

thedominator: lol, I saw a guy on a motorcycle eating fries at a redlight today. What really surprises me is my dad doesn't tell me to do 5 over the speedlimit.

dbo: I suppose thats true. I just got my permit not too long ago. This is like my 4th time driving. Thanks, i'll tell him to chill out next time. It actually seems like what he's doing is borderline dangerous.

Dad started on my Grandparent's farm when he was tall enough to reach the clutch pedal on the combine and tractors, I didn't start till I was 15. If we had lived in a rural part of Illinois or still live in Iowa I'd probably have started sooner. If we ever get out of here and down to Tennessee I'm hoping to find plenty of places to do so.

Heh. I drove again today, was a shorter ride though. I missed that gas station entrance *AGAIN*, and then when i pulled out my foot slipped off the throttle while i was pulling out in front of someone, and they had to slow down, but they didn't flip me off.

As for corners, i've only driven the van so far, so i go slow, having a high CoG and all...

dbo, i live halfway between chicago and detroit! heheh. I love driving though, and I haven't encountered anyone driving worse then I yet.

In my case, I like to hear feedback, and typicly keep a runing commentary on my driving of what I'm about to do. You maywant to give thata try, as it will beat him to any obvious advice.

Your Dad loves you, and wants to be sure you do things right right when driving.

A ride with Terv if you don't have a sqeamish stoomach is quite the experience, I'm part Comedian, part racing driver, and am in a little low down sports cars. I adjust myself to the passenger, my siter loves its when I go all out arond a corner, Mom, probably wouldn't, but I've never tried.

Butanyway, I started the habit of running throug hwaht I wasseeing with my Dad/brother as I learned to drive, why I was about ot akea lane change, etc, and so on...

When riding with other drivers, I paid attentiont to figuring ut what they did and why. I picked out good habits, and threw out bad ones.

If you can find the book Porsche Performance Driving by Vic Elford, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a bt about how a car drives, even for non Porsche owners. Vic has raced in rallies, F1, Le Mans, Ice, heat, almost any form of major motorsport, andhas a wide range of knowedge as he he orginaly studied to be an engineer.

The feedback isn't a problem, and I kinda expect it, since i'm learning to drive well. But, it's just certain annoyingly obvious things that bug me. Feedback kept me from sitting at a busy intersection getting ready to do a left turn all day.

Terv, if i'm somewhere near you sometime i'll take the ride! My dad used to do fun rides, but, he just scares me anymore. Last time i went for a ride with him in an actual car he tried to do a full throttle acceleration to 130ish :/

We used to go for rides in the drag car with some old stock car slicks, they're actually pretty safe on the street, they don't get the insane traction of a drag slick, and they break loose for burnouts well
