    Cool Rustler Renovation

ok, recently my motor on my car blew out because one of my spur gears stripped, causing the engine to over rev. Motor was totalled, but after that, I broke it off a jump. (the motor still ran after it over-revved, just VERY poorly). I replaced it with the traxxas engine replacement plan. I also got some alum parts. Here is a little list of RDracing parts I've got

Alum: upper/lower chassis, rear bearing carriers, front/back a-arms, rear a-arm mounts.

    CF: shock towers front/back.

Thats just the chassis upgrade, theres much more I won't go into detail.

There is over $800 in that car you see. Its gonna be indestructable!

here are some pics. Gonna break in the motor tomorrow I'm hoping.

I bet not I just tried to start the engine for the break-in. Only problem is (A) it won't stay running and (B) it seems really lean yet there is oil dripping out the pipe. I'm lost here. I've tried BARELY leaning the HSN. Not even 1/8 turn to see if it will stay on. I've messed with the idle needle. barely messed with the LSN. I'm lost here... any advice? This motor is being stubbern. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come

I'm leaving the castor blocks plastic. I'd rather those break then anything else up front.

Update with the breakin: I had to lean it about a half turn of the HSN just to keep it running. It is still running really rich with oil dripping out. But at least it stays on now. Within the first 2 minutes of the 2nd tank, the little e-clip holding my clutch bell on, came off and the bearing came out too! Rattling noise, but no damage to the motor or drivetrain. Goin to the LHS to pick up some more e-clips. just more to slow me down...

Break-in was successful and this has much more power then the 2.5! I can pull a wheelie on command now This motor runs so nice. I put through like 6 gallons today. Might have to run it again tomorrow while its still nice.

I do have 1 question though. When I took my airfilter off to clean it, I looked on the bottom of the foam (the side facing the carb) and there was blue stuff. The airfilter oil I use is Red not blue. Any ideas on what this is, and if it will wreck my engine?

I'm new to this great hobby, and I'm no expert, but it might be excess fuel from the carb that some how made its way to the filter. I guess I should have asked if the fuel you use is blue. If the fuel is blue, it might be what was described in my sentence above. It shouldn't harm your engine. This may mean you have it running a little on the lean side, or the fuel just somehow got there.

    Hope this helped!

Sorry to double post, but I goofed in my last post. When I said ".....you may have it running a little on the lean side......", I really meant to say a little on the rich side. Sorry if that confused you!

That would've been my next guess that it was fuel. Makes sense because it was running really rich when I first started her up. I mean, I had to turn the high speed needle a 1/2 turn clockwise just to keep the car from stalling out. It was still really rich even after the 1/2 turn! O well, she runs fine now. Acceleration is SWEET. wheelie on command and the top speed is scarey I've got gearing that is less then stock too. I've got like a 72 tooth spur instead of the 70 or whatever was on there. Can't wait to take it off some jumps

Gallons? Like... of fuel? At my LHS that's $137.70 worth.

You mean tanks, right? I'm all confuddled.

I was thinking that 6 gals was a bit to much.. if it's true you must of been driving 24/7 lol.

    Thanks.

he meant tanks, not gallons, six gallons would be let's see, 53 hours of runtime ( i calculated it)
and that in one day means he must live on pluto, where the days are longer LOL

haha yea I meant tanks But those 6 tanks took at least 2 1/2 hours. Especially the first 3 tanks of the break in, where I can't go over 1/4 or 1/2 throttle. Man, the weather is so nice today, I might have to drive again

nice car, it cant look bad with all of that rd racing stuff, if it was me i would die my rims, either black or blue, just cause i think white is ugly, and yes new tires are needed
i smelled nitro fuel while taking a shower this morning

All that RD racing stuff looks nice on there I'm disspointed though... their antenna tube that came with the alum upperchassis broke on my first rollover. I guess I should got back to the stock one.

I'm not getting new tires until these completely bald out! I'm using new street tires on it now. I was using those all day today. Got some nice driving in. Got a question though. Whenever I checked my temps it was never over 200 degrees, BUT it was performing REALLY good, just as good as my old TRX ran when it was at 250 degrees. Any idea of what this means? I think its a good thing I hope

maybe you could lean it out 1/8 of a turn for a bit more speed then as you got those temps..

If it was running so good at low temps, you probably shouldn't change the settings. Traxxas designed the 2.5R to run much cooler with the help of the new cooling head. It cools much better withe the new cooling head. You shouldn't be worried.
