definately get a tmaxx. to get into it completely new, it will cost around 450+. That would include a tmaxx, a charger and 7.2 volt nicad, a quart of fuel or a gallon depending on your price range, batterys for the car and rx, you need 12 aa's. This is definately not a cheap hobby to get into or be ine but i love it.

Since you have easy access to dirt areas I would go with the Tmaxx or a rustler. The Tmaxx has so many hopups and misc stuff you can really get carried away on spending. All the parts are easy to find (Ebay,LHS and this site). And if ya need help this is the place to get it.

Ya know, I don't think Traxxas even offers kits anymore.

They're all ready to run, as far as I have seen anyway.

I can't even remember the last time they had kits. They are RTR now.

Any good RC car/truck will have some kind of work involved but it won't take all day to do. If ya have a air compresser hose off the dirt and check for loose screws. Keep the fuel fresh and motor clean and your good to go.

for getting started I think an electric Rustler would be a good start.

electric is a lot simpler, easier and can be just as fast.

It is more suited to running for 5 minutes and putting away. Alot less time tuning and cleaning after a run.

total cost would be about $250 including truck, batteries, charger and a couple spare pinions.

    my two cents.

The speed varies but will not be as fast as nitro. As far as how long it lasts depends on gearing. There are many pros and cons to nitro vs electric. Go to you LHS and talk to the people working there for ideas on which way to go.

Regarding how fast and how long do batteries last....

Box stock electric rustler is 24 mph, good batteries will last about 8 minutes.

Nitro is faster, nitro has longer run times.

So why get electric? no mess, no fuss, essentially no tuning.

Hop-ups for electric are basically the same as for nitro. Bodies, shocks, tires, all the various unobtainium bits.

Still my two cents, the opinion is worth what you paid for it.

The great electric vs nitro debate has different answers for different people. For me the easy of use, quite operation, no tuning hassles tell me that I am an electric guy.

Your mileage may vary, offer subject to change, some items appear smaller, settling may occur.

Ask around, test drive if you can talk to people who own each!

8 minutes? come on.. that stinks...i do like the fact that its cheaper in the long run , how long does it take to charge the battaries?

For 3000 mah or 3300 mah probably around 35-45 minutes with a good charger. That is why you would get three or more batteries.

Run times are dependent on throttle, what you are running in, etc.

According to my Traxxas Catalog, you can order just about any of 'em in kit form.

But that doesn't mean your LHS would carry the kit version.

traxxas no longer produces any kits...they switched to only the rtr form...you MAY be able to find some old stock that a lhs has (usually people say they find em in the smaller ones)...but you will have a hard time finding a vehicle in kit form now...if you do then your lucky
