    Bad !!!!!!!!!!

I'm not positivly sure how this happened but...........

Yesterday: 5:45 PM, I cliked a link on a thead in the Traxxas alley. The Thread talked about 0-60 charts. In fact it's still on the first page. The link was somthing like "www.carstats.com"(not positive). It brought me to a site where I looked up my moms neon to see the top speed. About 20 pop ups came up and i closed them(by right cliking the name on the task bar then closing). Soon another one came up looking exactly like a windows warning. It asked if i wanted to install and run a program. There was no x up in the corner so i clicked NO. This poped up on every page at that site. I eventually got bored and closed IE and let my dad check his email. Thats when he noticed TONS of new icons in the "system tray". He ran a few programs to scan the harddrive only to discover 165 new spyware programs! Thease included nasty malware and other ones including, Coulomb Dialer(calls 900 numbers with rediculus phone charges, Really bad), Download Plus, Remenent BHO,Ezula, Download ware, and SCBAR, All of which were installed by "Active-X". It took us 2 hours to get the computer to start up and run with out locking up and expiriancing problems.

    Damages include:
Wininet.dll (part of Internet explorer) was raplaced, so IE won't run now and all other programs that use html wont run.

If IE would run we would notice that the search feature was hijacked.

Moderators PLEASE follow up on this. I had to post this using my laptop and a very slow dialup. My IE is now posibly permenently disabled and I don't want this to happen to any one else.

Hopefully we can figure this out, Its a big problem,

    Matt

I'm glad I didn't go to that site. There probably isn't anything traxxas can do other than close the thread or link.

From now on, people should double check the sites their linking to, just to make sure there are no pop-ups. I too am sick of having things like that appear on my screen.

I had responded in that thread, and went to both sites that were mentioned. Yes, I did get some pop-ups and "fake" warning screens - but they were all for well known adware programs (Date Manager and Bargain Buddy) and were easy to opt out of the install. Chances are, you had the adware/malware before you visited the site. I just scanned my PC with AdAware and it only came up with a couple of harmless tracking cookies.

If thats the case, then 90% of the people with a WWW link for their home page should remove it. Just about all free website hosts have pop-ups and adware/malware.

Thats posible but how come after i visited that site did the system tray fill up and Internet explorer get messed up?
I'm not sure but i think this is a very posible source. Maybe i visited a different spot on that site then you did, where i got it from. Once again there's no way to be sure but i wanted mods and members to be aware of this to help prevent others from expirianceing this. I also ran ad aware, this is how we found the 165 new programs.

try this, Mozzilla firefox, from your laptop download it, it may take a while, put it on a floppy disk or cd, then install it on your computer, and get rid of IE, with mozilla you will get little or no popups, youll be happy with it, trust me

You could also try tightening up your security options in Internet Exploder.

REVO Jake- I'll look into that, Thanks.

arceeguy- I'll try that if IE ever runs again, the real problem is that my main computer runs on windows 95(I know I'm way out of date) and the program that will fix IE only runs on 98.

Since you have Windows 95, you can try uninstalling IE and then re-installing it. You can download IE 5.5 from various places on the net. I'm assuming you have another browser installed already. (that's how you can still post here)

    using programs such as ad-aware:
    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

    and

    Spybot: Search & Destroy:
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

I recommend using both of them. Run one, then the other. This will make sure you get all the spyware and adware off your machine. Be sure to update the reference files once you install the programs.

Yep, those are the programs I use.

    Also I use:

CWShredder to check and remove coolwebsearch infections.

Spyware Blaster - prevents various adaware/spyware/malware programs from ever being installed

A good free antivirus is AVG AntiVirus. I use PC-Cillin, but I dont remember if it's free or not?

A good free firewall is the Sygate Personal Firewall. You need to know which ports to block and things like that, but it's good and free.

Scroll down to "Official Downloads" it's the 3rd program available for download. You'll see it.
