    Keep Busting gears

    Did I do something not right here?

    Basically, I've replaced the idler to a aluminium one.

    I've have been running with a 23 turn stock motor and 6 cells.

    Don't see the reason.

    I thot the metal idler will kind of be bulletproof? When I'm about to be satisfied about the car, then this happens. Kills the mood.

    I can't afford so much downtime (Ordering of spares & Wrenching) if it keeps breaking so often.

    I did not jump the truck much, just carpark bashing. This gear lasted me only about 10 packs.

    I thot that a tamiya gearbox will be more durable, thinking of adapting a wild willy gearbox in it.

    Just bought a SS5800 too, now, it seems that this box can't handle that kind of power.

    Similar sound to Swami's Nitro sounding stanpede.

    if you are stripping your alum idler (what i got from your post) you have extreme driving problems...swami never stripped on, he wore one out after a while, but never stripped on (at least he hasnt posted about it, or i just missed it)

    Do you have any form of grease or lubracation in the tranny? If not, you should. This keeps the idler from wearing prematurely against the steel top gear. From what you said, it sounds like you actually breaking the aluminum idler. This is pretty un-common. Normally the idler becomes "sharp" and strips the diff. Also check you tranny to make sure that there aren't any pieces of brocken gears floating around. The traxxas pede' gear box, while not optimum can be nbearly bullet-proof when you tke the neccisary steps. Good luck!

    When you replace a gear in the tranny, make sure you clean out all of the bits of teeth from the old gear that are hidden in there. Often they are wedged between the teeth of other gears. Several members have used this tranny for speeds exceeding 60mph, with much more power than the Novak SS & ridiculously more power than any brushed motor.

    As for adapting a Wild Willy gearbox, they're old & parts can be hard to find. It's a solid axle & would require major modifications to make it work & you probably wouldn't have an independent rear suspension anymore when you were done. Wild Willys were never noted for having strong gearboxes anyway.

    Thanks for all replies,

    I stripped the box yeaterday and found it is indeed the diff that's stripped.

    How to prevent this? I saw the steel diffs but it is too much to pay for. It seems that the diff is the only plastic part left in the whole internal transmission.

    unless you have a high powered bl then the steel diff isnt for you...
    adjusting your slipper, and improving your driving will save more gears than anything...loosen the slipper just a lil, dont land jumps with throttle on, dont go forward-reverse alot, just dont do things that will stress the gears too much...
    if you do that, you can still have fun, just drive smart...gears will last forever if you treat them right

    Man I still haven't stripped a differential.(except for the planetary gears ) I better bash harder

    Lol. no. All you have to do really is take some sand paper to your idler gear.It gets sharp from the premature wear from the metal gear. If you take sand paper to it, you will take the sharpnessout of it. So it doesan't stripp the differential. Also, keep it well and lubed. I have a question. in my Ruslter manual, it says that the Delrin machine gear goes on the diff. is this true? If so will it make it stronger, weaker, etc?

    Are you talking about the delrin top gear? If you are they recommend it to be used with the aluminum idler, but it's not at all neccisary. As a matter of fact you're just switching the weak point. Granted the top gear only makes contact with one gear, unlike the idler gears' two contact points, (which causes the idler gear to be under more stress than any other gear inside the tranny...) so I don't think that gear would break as often as the delrin idler gear. Still, that gear is just transfering the weak point, so it makes sense just to stick with the steel top gear.
