    Thumbs up turn fins

First of all like to say that I love the nitro vee when it's running but having a few difficulties with it. Waiting for the cooling head to come in since I stripped the threads for the glow plug. But in the mean time I want to know if anyone has any pics of the turn fins installed that makes the vee handle awesome. Thanks

I'll post pictures of my turn fins later this week when I have time. I used the original turn fin as a template. Then I made two fins using 1 mm brass plates and the original turn fin as the templates. I mounted the fins on the back of the boat on each side so that both were perpendicular to the "V" of the hull. The boat turns on a dime!

    Fins?

Hey Mud! Nice fins, but they look like they act more like trim tabs!
I thought turn fins stuck straight down into the water. Am I wrong?

Hey! Maybe they're trim tabs. Actually, I think the way I have it setup, perpendicular to the "V" of the hull and NOT horizontal to the plane of the water, these babies act more as turn fins when the boat planes. It handles better and turns on a dime now.

Trim tabs are placed more horizontal to the plane of the water to increase the power of the prop. Look at this diagram:

Interesting. Have you tried any other set ups? It seems to me that in a hard turn when the boat rolls on it side (somewhat) that a fin perpendicular to the hull would act like a fixed rudder ad be more effective. Whadda ya think. Remember I'm a newbie to the Vee.
My boat should arrive Friday. My plan is to try it "Au natural" Video tape it in the raw and tape it again with each individual upgrade/mod. I'll try to put together a web page for all the Vee heads to see the individual results. I hope to also add pics and vids on how to do the mods. I'm a newbie to the RC boat sport; but I think I can put together a decent site. My parents say that I taken apart every toy i ever had since I was six years old and to their amazement most work when I was done. My theroy is if you can't take it apart and see how it ticks, what fun is it! Everybody on this site has been a great help and I will be sure to duley note them on the site.

    SEE YOU IN MY WAKE!

    Hey One,

That's correct. In a hard turn, a fin that is perpendicular to the "V" of the hull is effective in stabilization. Look at the fins again, they angled so that they are perpendicular to the "V" of the hull. The original stock turn fin was perpendicular to the deck of the hull (i.e. surface of the water) and stuck straight down.

    Hi,

I reposted pictures of my turn fins. They're not as deep as Nitro's. I find that the handling is much, much better than the just having the original turn fin. These are the same shape and size as the original fins, but now they're placed on each side and perpendicular to the "V" of the hull.

    hey mud-
i think it would help to make your fins reach down deeper, because it doesn't catch all of the thrust of the turn up that high. I could be wrong, but it seems like common sense.

You're probably right, but I was afraid of drag if I had them lower. They worked great on the water so I didn't worry about lowering them.

Has anyone ever tried placing the fins up under the hull near mid ship like they do on real jetboats and skiboats? That is suppost to help it handle better also.

not on the Vee, they normaly only do this when the bottom of the hull is close to flat, like the cracker box. just to stop the slidding around that normaly comes with the flat bottom boats...the Vee has a great V and I would recommend putting the turn fins on the far out side of the hull at a 90 degree angle from the bottom of the hull
