How would the traxxas 7-cell batteries that come with it compare to say a 3.3 nitro?

I've seen a few with the old size maxx tires but not the 3.8 size. Which will be the best for offroad traction. The revo talons or the maxx tires?

If it is a 3.3, those things are pretty tight. Heat it up with a hair dryer and try again. I had a time with mine also.

I've got that backplate on my Jato. I'll post some pics later so you can see how it looks. The header is in the way but you can still get the starter in there.
