My EZ start wouldn't turn over my 3.3 when it was new. I hooked a 12v bump box battery to the ez start and it worked great.
It's possible your slipper clutch is loose. Does it have good "punch" off the line?
I melted a fuel tank on a truggy from heating from the sides, that's my reasoning for heating from the head :D

The head of the bolt could be stripped out and you are feeling the wrench slip.
Tighten the big nut on the spur gear. Sometimes they just loosen up over time.
3.5 gallons is nothing. My first 2.5 exceeded 12 gallons only to fail to the air filter coming off. You have lots of life left in that motor :cool:

I've had one way bearings slip to where the roto start, in my case, just free spins and the motor does not turn at all. Not even cleaning the bearing helped. A new one should fix your problem....
If it were installed backwards it wouldn't recoil. It sounds like you need a new one.

Yeah, it wouldn't blow the engine. You shouldn't see any problems with that tank with a 3.3
Is the motor not getting close enough or is it too far away?
It sounds to me that you need to adjust your mesh or lack thereof. From your details it seems like you should slide the motor towards the spur gear.

I think Traxxas makes CVDs for the 2.5 driveline, so you would only have to get the wider arms.
It does sound like your HSN is too rich. Reset your engine to factory settings and go from there. Let us know how it goes.
