    Take off gear cover. Inspect spur for sand/grit and or worn teeth. If a new spur doesn't cure it, it's probably a gear in the tranny. Idler, etc.

    Whatever truck has the motor that is over heating, yes, gear down. You gear by temperature. Keep the motor under 150f throughout the run. I aim for 140F, but I am conservative.
