I have found that even one a one tooth difference makes a huge difference in the torque curve. The bigger the tooth count on the pinion the more top speed and the less torque and visa versa.

Same thing was happening to me, had an air leak at the front bearing.
I like the New Era kit, your engine sits up a little bit but also tilts in towards the center of the truck.
