Externel BEC with EVX2? Is internal BEC switching?

Hi,

I'm looking into the idea of using two parallel 5s lipo packs to power a 14,4V Dewalt motor. This all on a stock EVX2.
We are discussing it here:

A couple of questions arised in this dicussion which deserve a new thread I believe.
- Would be possible to use an external BEC with the EVX2. Can anyone answer this?
- Also, would this take the load off of the internal BEC in the EVX2?
- And If the internal BEC were to be destroyed, would the EVX2 still work with an external BEC?
- Does anyone know if the internal BEC is a switching or a liniar regulator?

Yes, I have done this (for a different reason). You just disconnect the middle wire (best to do this on an extension cable so that you don't damage the EVX's cable) and use the U-BEC to generate power directly from the battery leads.

Here's a little update on some answers I managed to get:

-Probably not, because the internal BEC will always be needed to power the logics of the EVX2, without the internal BEC I suspect the EVX2 won't work.
- Still don't know :(


But I have decided to get an external BEC. The main question I have now is:

The External BEC will only need to power the two servo's and the receiver.
So does anyone know the stall current of one of the stock steering servo's?

I don't know exactly how much current they take, but I have used [URL="http://www.*********.com/*********/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4319"]this 3A UBEC costing $7[/URL] on the E-Revo with stock servos and had no problems.

Update,
I found the EVX2 internal BEC is rated at 2,5A and is probably linear.
So if anyone wants an external BEC, the best choice would be the 3A BEC from ********* (see link above).
