I have a very very stock rustler and it's time for some upgrades! The only thing that is changed is the motor, and that is a 19t fireball. I want to make it fly, not literally though. I want to change the ESC and motor, steering, everything to make it a whole lot better. Any ideas? Thanks!
unless you go brushles the stock esc is just fine.
you will need 8 ofthese for starters. along with these and these to put the bearings in.
this servo can help with speed also. eveything else (along with what i suggested) is really up to preferance i would think. i'm not really into the speed thing but thats what i see others using.
Well first you need to decided if you want to go brushless yet. As stated above you need to switch to bearings all around. Also you will need to go into the transmission and change to all metal gears. I suggest getting rpm carriers for the bearings and you will need 8 bearing total 5x11 i think they are. Also i suggest maybe some new batterys to suit the brushless set up spc makes great packs to start with if you are not ready to go lipo. And they carry lipos at a great price also which perform just as good as anything else out there.
I would also suggest to upgrade to vxl camber links and sterring links they are a bit stronger than the factory stuff. FOr when you crash that brushless monster you want to build.
If you want to go brushless i would buy a rpm bumper. There cheap. And if you break it they will replace it for free (if it was not abused)
the rpm help ALOT.
I wanted to change the ESC to a waterproof one.
To specifically adress your situation.... I'd install some 5x8 bearings in the bellcrank. The stock servo is fine but for additional grunt I'd install this Or better yet: this which is brushless! (available for $120 on ebay) The Venom is rubbish and merits immediate discarding. I'd replace it with http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSGT8&P=7 Capable of 37 m.p.h. geared 23/86 on a 6-cell maxamps or SPC (SPC being the best NIMH battery, period)
If you would like to waterproof your servo transfer the new one I linked to into this case. The ESC and RX can be waterproofed with liquid electrical tape.
As far as hopups this is my standard reply:
We'll assume the car is an XL-5
-RPM bearing carriers f/r
-Big bore Shock Caps
Basher Stage 2
Stage 1 plus
-RPM Arms F/R
-RPM Shock Towers F/R
-VXL Adjustable Camberlinks
Aluminum Castor Blocks
-New Tires Dirt
Hawgs, Masher 2000's, Geolanders) (Require's 2.2 rims) or for street
Road Hawgs or Speed Paws (requires 2.2 rim)
-Brushless System and VXL Transmission (Sidewinder, Mamba, VXL)
Basher Stage 3
Stage 2 plus
-Blast Heat Sink
-Jato Driveshaft Conversion http://monster.traxxas.com/showthread.php?t=430136
-Big Bore Shocks
Racing I hesitate to even make recommendations in this section
-RPM Bearing Carriers F/R
-Tires see what others run on your local track
-Nitro Spindle Conversion instructions on this website projektrc.webs.com
Aluminum Castor Blocks (FLM or equivalent)
-SRT front shock tower projektrc.webs.com
-Nitro Rustler rear arms
-Upgraded servo (625mg?)
-Pro ball differential
XL-5 supported motors
-Team orion 15t pro bb (recommended)
This is what I have so far
Pretty stock looking.
bearings, carriers, traxxas aluminum bell crank, xl5 esc, gladiator tires, wheels on all 4, and 7 cell battery!
The xl5 isn't going to make it faster is it?
be better than what you have get the waterproof slash esc because its waterproof :)
whats that white square thing inside of that silver case, thats above the motor?
a very OLD speed control:)
whats that white square thing inside of that silver case, thats above the motor?
That is the resistor for the mechanical speed control. My Rusty had one of those....a loooonnngggg time ago. Go brushless and get it over with lol. There is no comparison.
I'm thinking about getting the brushless kit from traxxas with the speed control and motor, then a new tranny.
This has some good stuff...
Speed control, duratrax Streak 12t limit, $35
bearing carriers from whoever and you might as well upgrade the links as well, I think those run about $20 as a set
also you might want to do something with the shocks whether it be aluminum shock caps or totally different shocks.
From there you can go all out with brushless or just upgrade the truck. Or nothing at all, although that's the least fun.
I know this is gonna sound dumb, but get the fiberglass tie-bar. Maybe it is just me, but my car feels like it has sloppier handling without it, plus it acts like a weak point, breaking in another parts place.
Man that battery pack is old i remember running that in one of my first cars..Thank for the flashback:D ..
I bought a Rustler once that looked a whole lot like yours.
I want to change the ESC and motor, steering, everything to make it a whole lot better
The most sensible thing to do is to sell your Rustler and buy a VXL Rustler.
If that idea is unacceptable, then funding may be an issue. So .... don't spend all your money now because you will need to fix broken parts from time to time. And .... start with the upgrades that make the biggest difference first before you move on to items that are more "bling".
I don't know what kind of charger you are using but a nice peak charger (that will also do lipo packs for future upgrades) and a new name brand NiMh pack would be my first upgrade. This will make it faster and make it run longer.
My second upgrade would be some new rear tires, (The ones you have will wear out fast.) and a RPM front bumper (to help protect the servo and servo saver).
I could keep going but ........
How much money do you intend to spend now?
How much money do you intend to spend over the next few months?
You should come up with a plan instead of saying "I want to upgrade everything". We can better help if we have an idea of what you want to do.
If you haven't done so you should read Mis' page here -
and here -
Haha pretty much I just wanna go fast. Just like Rickey Bobby.
