I was thinking about using wd40 or some other traction compound on the traxxas slicks for what should be some killer grip. Thinking it might take off like a rocket. Anyone tried it? If so, how much of a difference did it make?

Why is WD-40 considered a traction compound? You should try a product that is actually a traction compound. You can get it in gallon sizes I know, maybe smaller.

Apparently it softens the rubber and increases the grip. From what i have read, its an old rc trick. Its also already sitting in my garage. Looking to see if anyone has experience with it or any "labelled" traction compound.

Yes it softens the rubber and increases grip, giving you more 'bite'

Do you spray it on the tires and then burn rubber or just spray and let it settle on there ?

WD=Water Displacement
40= 40th try
What a versatile product, but never heard of it for traction compound! Perhaps Mineral Spirits would do the same:)
51% Stoddard solvent (i.e., mineral spirits: primarily hexane, somewhat similar to kerosene)
25% Liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant; carbon dioxide is now used instead to reduce WD-40's considerable flammability)
15+% Mineral oil (light lubricating oil)

If you soften them, wouldn't they be more prone to ballooning?

I came across it a few places on the internet. I think if you over did it, soaking the rubber completely through, it could make the tire stretch or deform. Seems people have of variety of ways of applying it. A conservative first trial might be to clean the surface of the tire, spray some on, wipe off excess, and let dry. I put a test patch on a spare tire from my Summit and that area seems to have much better grip.

I heard wd40 cracks rubber though over time as it takes the moisture out. I'd be careful

Ive spayed tires before ,makes a difference. just spray the wd40 let it soak in then ready to ride.

There are companies that make actual traction compound. Pargon fx comes to mind. But i've used w/d40 before when building fresh touring car kits. I soak the belts that drive the car for about 30 min. Helps reduces drivetrain resistance.

I have Paragon FX and it works good. It smells like wintergreen gum and some people get sick of the smell but just use it in a well ventilated area and you'll be fine.
