Picked up a used E-MAXX today from a friend. Seems the ESC was giving him problems with a wire short until it eventually died. I am going to attempt to re-solder all the leads and also replace them with new 12ga and plugs before buying a new one.

My question is, if I have to purchase a new one, is there an alternative to the HV-MAXX ESC?

The truck currently has the HV-MAXX Brushless 6.5 system installed.

I am very new to R/C vehicles

Update 11:32pm

Established that my problem is with the male/female 2pin connectors for the batteries and ESC. Looks like I will be making a trip to Radio Shack tomorrow to see if they have the pins and plastic connectors.

NOooooooo.....

Dont replace the junk tamiya/ molex connectors with more the same- they melt very easily so are no good on an application like this.

You need to decide which brand or connectors you are going to use for all your equipment from this point onwards- I suggest either Deans, Traxxas connectors, or EC5 connectors ( google them ). Traxxas ( trx ) plugs are very nice and easy to solder, much better than the junk molex plugs as they can carry alot more current before they heat up and melt the connector housing.

For the purposes of de-newbification:

Refer to this to find parts, upgrades, batts & chargers etc:

There are many many many alternative to the hvmaxx systems- just have a brief look around the emaxx & erevo ( same truck, different suspension ) sections and you will see bazillions of threads asking about suitable BL systems for these trucks- go figure the same few guys end up responding all the time & the answers are always pretty much the same. The emaxx faq & tutorials section on BL systems should point you in the right direction though

Good to know, I appreciate the links and knowledge.

I was already thinking of how crappy molex are for anything these days. I saw the TRX connectors in LHS today and now that I know more I will go pick some up.

I definitely plan on upgrading to lipo in the future. Being that I have about $5 in this truck so far it would be a good upgrade from the worn out Venom 5000's it is currently running. Even thought of selling it to fund an e-revo. Who knows what the future holds. I am already addicted.

I know the EC3 handle 60amp continues I use them for all my stuff but I only ran a 2c lipo at max. The ECx are easy to solder to and have a + and - to dummy proof it. the only down side is they are not reuasble like deans are.

What is the consensus on the XT-60 connectors? I have average soldering capabilities but have access to a microsoldering station at work and some individuals who really know how to use it.

If you see *s in your post, you MUST edit or remove the filtered word.

I've seen them. They actually seem okay, but I'd go with one of the other 3 types, preferably a type where you can commonly get batteries with the connectors already soldered on, simply for convenience.

Thanks. I believe I am going to go with the Traxxas connectors as they are easy to get on island here in Hawaii. Time to spend some money on the interwebz!
