View Full Version : RUSTLER down HELP!
12-31-2010, 07:09 PM
Background: I recently bought a Rustler VXL last summer. I was running it at one of the local parks here in Okinawa (Comprehensive Park) on a running track. At the time I had a Lipo 3S 8000 mAH SPC battery. The Rustler got stuck around an obstruction. Despite not being able to see the veh, I continued to work the controls. When I arrived at my Rustler the steering linkage was binded. It took me about 20 min to forcefully render the linkage unstuck. The Rustler has not been working since.
-When I connect a battery (lipo or NIMH) the ESC comes right on instead of me having to turn it on (1st problem).
-When I work the controls, the steering operates very very very slowly and fwd control works but reverse does NOT (2nd problem).
-The light in the receiver box shuts out after about 20 sec of turning the wheels left and right and now trigger doesn't work at all (3rd problem).
-When I cut the ESC off, it won't turn back on unless I disconnect and reconnect the battery. (4th problem) It seems that the ESC is in the Race mode but in order to change it, the ESC has to be off and I need to hold the EZ button. Once I turn the ESC off, I get no response.
Can anyone HELP a down Rustler?? :(

That's EXACTLY what happend to me a few weeks ago!
I asked this same question and told of the sypmtoms. Nobody here could work it out. Must be a rare occurance.
In the end, I figured the servo shorted and somehow must've damaged my ESC too. I opened the servo up and the gears were fine. I had the exactly same symptoms as you have. Except when the problem occured for me, I was only using the steering.
All I can say is get a new servo and probably a new ESC too. But there could be a way to fix this. But nobody knew who I spoke to on here.
Good luck, I hope you too can get running again!
Anyway, I bought a new Savox servo and a new ESC. The ESC still hasn't arrived. I have no idea what happend.
When I unplug the servo from the reciever, the truck runs fine, forward and backwards, but the ESC turns on by itself when I plug the battery in.

Very important, NEVER EVER RUN YOUR RC TRUCK WHEN YOU CAN'T SEE IT. Not being there to see what you're dealing with my guess would be you've cooked your esc and servo. A friend of mine hit a phone pole and continued to give his truck throttle and his esc cooked with in a sec or two. Solution, he had to replace it.

REDMAN and RUSTY,
Thx for the info. I think it's the steering servo and ESC as well. If I'm going to replace those two then I may as well upgrade the entire system. If so, what do you recommend?
BTW, Thx for the advice on running my veh only when I can see it. I will pass this on to my boys also. I just bought them a pair of Bramas for xmas.

Redman, I think it isn't frying that's happend here, but I cannot be sure, it certainly wasn't the case with my truck anyhow. My truck had just been turned on and I hadn't even driven anywhere, just fiddling with the steering a little.
I'm pretty sure the servo shorted. Must've been faulty. Something strange. And yes, pass the "never run when you can see it" on to anyone who it'll help.
I really don't think you need to upgrade the velineon motor. But I've heard that the Mamba Monster Pro ESC is good, but I couldn't affford one when I bought mine. I suggest that ESC, as I've HEARD good things about it, but I wouldn't replace the motor until you fry it. But if you wanna you may, just saying it isnt necessary. You'll be spending a fair bit of unecessary money.
The servo I got was the Savox SC-1258TG coreless servo. It's metal geared and a bit stronger than the Rustler's stock one. it isn't waterproof, but you can fix that with Plasti-dip.

Rusty, thx bro. You're right that it would be a pretty hefty investment to get another motor, esc system when it's not exactly necessary. I will look into getting the Mamba Max Pro ESC instead of the Mamba Monster Pro ESC because pavementsurfer suggested it. I'll stick with my Rustler motor but is the MMP ESC compatible with the motor? I'll look at the specs and compare them to the Rustler ESC.
I'll look at that servo you mentioned as well. I'm over seas so I prefer Stormer Hobby to order my parts as they ship to FPO addresses, ship in 24hrs, no shipping cost, and have the cheapest prices I've been able to find. R/C Planet has a really good selection and more comprehensive website but are a bit more expensive and I have to pay shipping as well.
Thx again for the help.

I just looked at the Mamba Max Pro ESC on Stormer ($125) but the combo with the 5700kv motor is only ($190). Tower has the combo for $196. I think a $65 upgrade may be worth having an extra motor. Do you know how much increase performance, durability or speed is achieved with the MMP vs the Velineon?

The mmp wont necessarily improve performance other than it being completely adjustable. I just feel that because it's 6s capable it's not nearly as liklely to be taxed and get hot trying to run 3s with the VXL motor. It pairs perfectly with the VXL motor other than the motor connectors are differernt on the 2. (vxl motor uses 3.5mm bullets while the mmp uses 4mm bullets) other than that they work extremely well together, if you plan to run 3s stay away from the 5700 castle motor. Go with the 4600 combo instead.

If you wanna pay the extra money, yea sure, go for it! If I have anything conk out again, I'd probably get the MMP.
True the extra motor will be good, but I agree with Pave, If you wanna use 3s, I've heard over and over get the 4600. I've heard that the MMP doesn't break as easily. That's the main reason I'm interested.

PAVMENTSURFER and RUSTY,
I run a RUSTLER VXL so should I just get a Sidewinder SCT and a CMS4600 and just get a 2S lipo or do you think it's worth getting the Mamba Max Pro and the Neu Castle 4600?
