With 2S lipo and stock pinion (11 tooth) you can go 30 mph without heating problem (120F) but if you put the 17 tooth optional gear your motor heat more (150F+)

isn't 30mph a little bit slow for lipo power? with the stock batt it says it can go 35 out of the box

If you want more speed 40mph+ put the 17 tooth and watch the temps.

Traxxas always lists top speeds with the larger pinion but this setup can typically only be run on smooth pavement or heat will be come an issue. On 2S you probably can do 35... but not constantly.

I run 3s 20c 5000 mAh with no problems. Although i've never had my temp gauge out there, I can tell you it's fine because after a run, generally, it isn't hot to touch.

That's kind of what I thought but I just wanted to be sure. Thanks! (I would test it myself but I never got through a full run. My esc decided to take a smoke break as so many others have, and now it's on its way back to Traxxas.)

does a motor heatsink with fan help keep temps down?

Yes sir, I have one on my Slash PE that I race, and I can continuously do heat after heat without the motor warming up. I highly recommend them.
