I recently wrote a post asking about the 30-turn motors that Traxxas offers as an alternative to the stingers. Just wanted to let you all know that they did exactly what I wanted. In the pool, the speed is more reasonable, and it is making life easier on my young son who is trying to get the hand of steering it. On a bigger body of water, it wasn't quite as exciting as with the stingers, but we got about 15 minutes out of a single 1700 battery. Furthermore, it doesn't turn as sharply, which makes the boat much more forgiving for novices.
Still looking for the Speed Gems for myself no open water, but for the pool and for my son the 30-turns are a good fit.
