it is good to run the engine with a air filter on it because it will protect the internals from debris.

Definatley! I suggest a Motor Savors air filter.

Does the NV come with an air filter, or do you have to buy one?

it doesn't come with a(n) air filter so you have to buy one. Traxxas didn't put one in the box because it is uncomon to find a nitro vee getting air off a dirt mound.
