View Full Version : Springs & Shocks
I have Just bought a used M/B. I used it for about half an hour everything seemed ok. The suspension linkages were worn so I decided to do a complete rebuild. I live in the UK so I ordered parts from Traxxas UK and I received the Parts by Mail 21 hrs after I ordered them! Everything seems ok now but can anyone give some advice on setting up the Shocks & Springs? I will be running it on flat grassland to start with.

if you look at all the other posts theres alot of info on setting up the shocks and springs,be careful with a hydraulic oil if you hit hard you may bend the shafts, i use 40 weight in the rear with a 4 hole damper and 35 in the front with also a 4 hole. glad you got a good buggy!!
I took the buggy out for a test today. I filled the shocks with hydraulic oil and preloaded the rear springs so that when the buggy was at rest the drive shafts were parallel to the ground and the front springs were at maximum hieght. This thing flies over bumps. I think TRAXXAS has got the balance about right because we must have made sbout 50 or more jumps with a perfect landing everytime. Rear suspension was a bit soft so I preloaded for full hieght. The shock oil is to thick for cold weather (3Deg F) the suspension was taking to long to recover. Has anyone tried it without oil? My son and I ran it untill we ran out of petrol (GAS). I Have NEVER EVER had so much fun with R/C I can see now why you guys Love the M/B so much.

I use alot of the shock spacers and no shock oil(only for now need!lol)And It runs sweet and grunts on take off because of no oil, wich I think adds take off power. But Im gonna find some oil lighter than 40 wt. and see if it still handles as good?May be 35 wait all the way around?

I bent 4 different Shock shafts trying to get this right, but i Used the 2hole pistons after widening the Hole a Little bit. The Stock Oil was WAY too thick, so i went to 30wt Associated Oil. This think handles on a Dime now, even jumps clean with the Shocks doing their job on Impact. It was so stiff ot of the Factory that it'd bounce when it hit the ground, but now it truely Haldnes like a little 1/10 Gastruck. I've got alot of preload, but atleast im not bending anymore Shockshafts, right?-Matt

I bent my first shock shaft yesterday. I was messing about with the suspension settings etc and I had it too soft and spun out and hit a tree. Won't do that again!! well maybe. I have also loaded the shocks with 30 wieght oil but I wont be able to run it till the weekend. I still have massive under steer under throttle so I am trying to sort that out too. Jim

What about doubling up on the shocks? I think this would help some. Should be an easy mod.

Im not sure,Where would you mount the extra bulky MB shock.Cause any other type of shock would seam insufficiant.?Im looking at my MB and there just insnt enough room.Would be cool if a person could though. But Im sure one of these genioses(sp?Obviously Im not.lol.)will be able to come up with some thing feaseable.Give em time.

Jim /I'm new to the MB so I haven't had time to bend anything (yet) But I'd be grateful for any tips on fixing the understeer problem as you find them thanks

Bigger Bore Shocks with a Bigger Diameter Shaft would totally solve this problem. Of course lighter oil is a givin also. I modified my rear pistons and went to 30wt oil. The Front i actually didn't mod at all, i just went to 40wt oil with them. I need rear Anti-Sway bars and everythin'll be ok. My Handling is awesome right now, i can almost turn the same laptime as with my GT! I can hardly believe it myself, but this thing really sticks now. Actually Truns under power for me, which is really the only thing i was trying to acomplish. Still bending Axles right and left for some reason though. It seems like it happens when im Powering through rutted corners more than any other time. Any of you guys experienced this yet?-Matt

Unfortunatly I did not run my M/B untill late on Sunday afternoon. I went out with my wife on Saturday morning to get a selection of shock oils to try some different Shock/Spring settings, however, I came home with a T-MAXX!!!. If you have not got one GET ONE NOW!!!!!!!!!! But don't sell your M/B. I also bought some sway bars for the M/B. They do make a real difference to the handling and it made it easier to hold a power slide through the turns. It was also easier to set up the M/B for sharp 180 turns (rally style)It is still not quite right yet, but at least I feel more in control. I like the idea of a second set of shocks on the rear. I am going to take a serious look at the problems of fitting them.
I forgot the shock oil but the 30 wieght oil that I put in seemed to be ok.
Has anyone tried to radically change the front suspension/steering geometry yet?
