View Full Version : Stock Brushless with 3s and 12t...the ultimate combo?

Hey Everyone,

I just installed a 12t pinion on my 3s powered stock VXL 4X4 Slash. It's a bit dark out here so it's a little hard to tell, but is this not possibly the ultimate setup? :)

Instantaneous acceleration and the top speed seems decent. More importantly, after doing a lot of quick accelerations and quick stops non-stop, it seems my motor is just warm?!

I do run a heat sink motor fan and the Traxxas ESC fan, but still, I was expecting more heat...

Anyone else try this setup? I'm encouraged so far...

Pete

I've used it. It works well. When it gets really hot out though, I don't think it'll keep cool.

once it gets hot out the temps will be horrible. i went to a hv 5.5 and i was only running 2s. and i was using a fan and heat sink.

I'm running 11/54. Gives speeds of about 40mph, and temps stay descent. But with extended hard running, it can get hotter then I like, over 160. I think around 168, is the hottest I've seen.

What kind of ambient temps were you seeing during your 160+ runs?

with 14/54 gearing and 85* outside i was getting 160* in 10min. that was just way too hot for me.

What kind of ambient temps were you seeing during your 160+ runs? Mid 80's. But as stated that's with hard offroad driving with alot of grass and stuff at WOT. Just playing around it's not that hard to keep the temps around 150ish. I'm still on the fence on whether or not to put my HV 4.5 back in. It's faster and stays cooler, but the VXL is really providing all the speed I need, for what I do.

wouldn't you get longer run times then with the hv 4.5 since it is more efficient, and it is bigger, so it is using less battery power to go the same speed?

if you keep it pinned the whole time the battery will die much quicker. but if you take it easy it should last longer because of the higher efficiency.

__________________If geared for the same speed, then yes, the Novak should run a little longer, but only the difference of efficiency. Problem being 11/54 is the lowest you can go, and with the higher KV of the 4.5, you can't do it. So you end up geared for a much higher speed, which is great, if you want to go that fast. But the Novak runs cooler geared for the same speed on 2s, then the VXL does on 3s.
