What exactly are these things protecting? One of mine is torn, I looked underneath it and it doesn't look like any kind of joint or u-joint. Can it be replaced or do I need a new outdrive? The blue ones near the wheels.

im guessing you are talking about the boots on the drive shafts??? anyway if you are they just keep dift and debris out of the shafts and pervent binding. it will bind if you have dirt in there. and yes you can replace them. i replaced both of my rear ones. or if you want to make it easier you can by the shaft pre assembled already. cheaper to buy the boots though.

the boots are really cheap but very hard to glue in place. The blue boots are just really cheap and seem to tear easily in the rear. Break down the shaft and switch the blue part to the inside and it won't shred as easy.

Thanks. I think I will just pick up a complete pair of shafts and install them as you recommend. Save the old ones as backup.
