My 40 watt iron just doesnt seems to be cutting it for me while trying to put on my TRX battery plugs. I can tin both wires etc, but they just wont get hot enough to get a good solid contact.
Any suggestions? I am using a pig tails with the trx plug.

are you using flux core solder? or did you apply flux to the terminals?
i use a 40w for everything. if you can tin the wires then it should go.
also tin the treminals

Make sure you're using a chisel tip on the iron, a pencil tip won't cut it for your purposes.
When building connectors or batteries, I usually use a 65W or higher iron as well, but I use only silver solder, which takes a bit more heat.

I was going to get the Hakko 936 but I got hit with an overdraft fee and it killed my extra scratch for this week. Trying to find a decent on at Frys.com since I can pick it up locally. Thinking about just taking them to my LHS and paying the guy 5 bucks to fix them up for me real quick and wait and get the Hakko and get something decent.

Just get a 60w Dubro iron for $7.99, you need 60w anyway, not 40w.

not if you know how to solder you don't. you will never need that much heat. i used to have a 80w but it just got stuff to hot. and was really too big. anything on this truck can be done with a 40w. i even solder 8mm bullet plugs with my 40w no problems. trust me. plus if you get a weller they are built like tanks. i leave mine outside year round , 13* weather, i can fire it up and it will get the job done. one thing you need is extra tips. it likes to burn holes in tips. it will last longer than a $7 iron anyway
