View Full Version : Where to Temp??

Where is the best place to take a temperature reading on an electric motor and why?
I have tried on the can itself and on the endbell, with vastly different results.
Using a VXL on 2S Lipo, but cannot find the happy medium. I have used from 18/86 to 23/86 gearing with very similar temps on the can itself. a difference of 10degress from lowest to highest and that is at 186F, lowest being 174F.
Any ideas or solutions. Bearings are all good, running gear is all free, gear mesh is perfect, havent stripped or worn a gear yet. 8 packs in total without any problems except the shocks that i replaced with some from ebay, Team BlueStar, and they have been great!

I'm curious about this as well. On a brushed motor, the hottest place will always be the endbell, because this is where you get heat from the armature and the brushes. However, the magnets are on the can, and they're what you really have to watch out for. My suspicion is that the can temperature is more important than the endbell temperature, but I'm really not sure.

I would use the highest temp you get as your reading.
186 is kinda hot!

The closer you can get to the rotor would be the best.
If you take one on the can you know it'll be hotter on the actual rotor. and that's what you're worried about. That being said on my vxl i usually do the can and just don't let it get over 160 figure if it's hotter inside it should still be safe.

Ah, yes. Sorry, I had somehow missed that you were asking about a brushless motor. On a brushless, just go with the absolute highest reading you can find.

As I normally run nitro, i have 2 temp guns now. The PE i mentioned and now a THS tuning screwdriver bought for my losi, but these things vary greatly in temp on the VXL 15-20 degrees and only by 3-5 degrees on a nitro engine.
This is all causing a great amount of confusion.
I see a lot of people running up to 23/86 with no heat problems. Could I be undergeared at 19/86 and causing the same temp problem by straining the motor? Although I have tried a lot of different gearing, I think I should change the spur out for a 90, then adjust again on the pinion.
Anyone have the integy fan for the vxl, and how do you mount this thing with the RPM bumper holder.
If anyone has done it, please post pics to see as well, it would be appreciated.
