View Full Version : Novak HV 6.5 Up In Smoke

Had my HV 6.5 since August. It ran fine for off-road. So me and my friends changed to on-road. So I changed my springs to orange front, gold rear and got HPI Racing Phaltline Street Tires.

So I'm at a Costco parking lot doing simple figure eights to test out the new springs and tires, and after only 3 minutes, I lose power and see smoke. I raced to the E-Revo and turned off the esc and unplugged the lipo batteries.

Motor and batteries are fine, the esc is fried. Hopefully Novak will fix it under warranty. It ran fine up to this point with the stock spur gear and 16t pinion. Lipo's were MaxAmps 7.4 8000.

Will post pics later on. Basically, one side of the ESC got melted and burned a hole on the side plastic, but at least it didn't damage the rest of the truck.http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=mhmqrgkm1jn&thumb=5

If it isn't under warranty, bite the bullet now and switch over to the Monster Combo... good luck.

They should replace it, I had 2 years of reliable running with my HV.

As for the Castle system , wait a few more months until all the cobwebs are sorted.

I wonder if Novak is having some real issues or if it's just the fact that they are really too small of a motor for these monster trucks to be geared much over stock speeds for very long, that is if you push your truck hard. You can't volt up with low kv motors, and neither seem to handle the added amp draw with the current limitations, so your kinda stuck pushing the crap out of your ESC. It just seems more and more people are having their ESC's lite up, must be castle tagged novak and they are "it" now :) It's funny the MMM's are rocks now. just thinking out loud :)

PS the last week of racing at my track two guys had novaks 'let the magic smoke out' as well as all the other posts ive read, but it was kind of funny because they had previously been laughing at me cause of my MMM v1 and v2 issues.

This is what I think , the Novak is near on 5 years old and is an ancient system. I personally have run it and happy for what it does. my old 6.5 did 35mph. I have mates with Castle system and their systems have popped!

The Castle is new technology so of course its going to be better e.g faster. The biggest issue I have with castle is the amount teething problems that have occured. No doubt Novak had its issues when they first come out but plenty out there are satisfied with it.

I'm sure Novak are planning a decent 6S rival for the Summer 2009.

Yes, some of the monsters have popped, but keep in mind that they are running a little higher voltage than the novak. And most folks running the mmm are running a LOT more motor than the novak motor. The two systems are hardly comparable. I could rave about the vxl system cause its been reliable but then it isn't setup to push 22 volts either.

There are some V3 failures, probably just as many as Novak falures. But it does seem that the new transcap is a problem with the Novak. The 6.5 system might be a little on the weak side, but the 4.5 is just as strong as anything on 4s,for bashing, but it can be thermalled.

I cant believe that there are as many V3 failures as novak failures.

no way.

I cant believe that there are as many V3 failures as novak failures. The Novak has been out a long time. There are probably 10 times more Novak systems in use. When you look at that there really aren't alot of Novak failures.Don't get me wrong I'm sure hoping that the MMM turns out to be great, especially now that thats what I'm running, but the Novak has been a very dependable system.

Wrong motor for the wrong application. The 6.5 is not designed to haul around a Revo...

Sorry, but I beg to differ. I raced with my 6.5 all last summer geared 15/68 and 16/68 and it ruled the track. Had absolutely no problem with the nitro revos and truggies. Geared around 37mph. My truck weighs 8.5lbs w/o batteries.

My 6.5 has never had 1 problem. Not one. People hate on the system because It's not capable of running 6s and doing speed-runs. I personally think speed-runs are lame. How fun can that be? Up and down your street. Too many youngsters thinking speed is king.

Racing IMO, is where it's at. Racing on a track with 5 other drivers who are into the same thing is fun. It's technical, competitive and fun. We have a great 1/8th scale track and my 6.5 is fine. Can it do 50mph? No, and I don't want it too either.

Sorry long day at work.

Now i have a completely new 5.5 hvMax in the shop and i am not going to put it in another car. Three months old, run ten times and replaced twiced.

Utter RUBBISh. The MMM's are the way forward, don't believe the Haters who are struggling on with inferior systems

Not really i have heard of v3's gone in smoke even before ran and just been pluged and dotn work, imo they still have issues i want a esc that will last at least 5 years for 300$ like a nitro engine lasts 5 years ujust have to replace the pistion and sleeve
