View Full Version : ESC went poof

I just hooked up 2 x 7 cells battery packs in my truck and the ESC went poof: blue smoke coming out of it. Traxxas says that 7 cell packs should be fine.
I checked both packs and the voltage was up to 9.5 volts per pack. I know that the truck is rated for up to 16.8, so can it be the problem (9.5v x 2 = 19v)? I think when you charge batteries, the voltage goes over the limit and then discharge progressively. Am I right?
Did anyone have the same issue?

Your esc has gone to silicon heaven...
Yeah, the peak voltage will be alot higher than 16.8v, but usually the esc just wont run for a minute or two, until the peak has dropped (wiggle steering back & forth) a little. The fact it just went poof sounds like either the batteries are wired up wrong (unlikely), or it just plain didnt like you and decided to commit suicide. Call traxxas support and explain, and they should ask you to send in the esc and send you out a new one under warrenty.

exact same happened to my emaxx with 2 7 cell maxamps 4700. called traxas took a week to clean my truck and got new esc by then. on my second esc now

this seems all too framiliar, if anyone read my thread from a couple days ago my evx2 just recently failed the first time i ran 7 cells, the mah was 5000 so meaning higher voltage and peak draw compared to the 6 cell 3600's i was running. i asked the tech if there have been problems, he said considering the amount of e-maxx's sold not many but the year is young... vx-12 is haunting us few unlucky ones...

How long is guaranteed the EVX-2? On the web site, I think it says 30 days. I also removed the original connectors, which could result in a 25$ charge...
just put the traxxas plugs back on and send it in. I believe they will replace if they know the evx2 if faulty. I'm on my third, so far so good on 7 cells.
