Sorry I cant remember is the Slash fully water proof like the emaxx?

It is. The servo and esc are exposed and waterproof, and the receiver is located in a waterproof box. Might want to take the necessary precautions on the battery connections if you plan to really get it wet. A balloon ziptied over the connectors should do fine.

Sweet I just realized how much cheaper electrics are than Nitro`s I never thought I would say this but I think I am going to get an electric rc. I am going to use it in the winter when its cold and I dont want to heat up my engine. Plus it looks cool and its water proof mud here I come.
Whats the biggest battery a xl-5 can take?

It'll take 8 cells. There's also aftermarket that'll take more.

The battery connectors should be fine.

The XL-5 ESC can handle an 8 cell battery pack, but the Titan motor won't like that voltage. I would stick with 6 and 7 cell packs, personally.

What happens to the motor with 8 cells? (I know nothing of electric stuff :o)

It will wear out much more quickly, and the chances of over heating it increase quite a bit. They can be ran on eight cells, but you have to keep a close eye on them and be prepared for the shorter motor life.

Im with you its like I am starting all over in this hobby I am getting a baby sitting job this summer I am getting paid 100 a month so I think I will get a slash. I was jealous of my little bro he was out driving his rustler in the winter and I had to watch plus its water proof so that will make it fun.

Okay. Do you recommend a motor good for 8 cells? I might go brushless after a while though.

Cynix
06-08-2008, 08:08 PM
I would like to go brushless but there not water proof and I am mainly going to use my nitro so I think I will stay xl-5. Do you guys no of any good batteries for the xl-5 that are not to expensive. This is going to be a bit slower than I am used to lol.

Run it stock until it's not enough power for you. You get what you pay for with batteries. Buy the best you can afford.

Are Venom or Trinity good brands?

Garbage_Man

There's better out there. Atleast that's the general census. It really depends on what you want to spend. There's always more if you have the money. At about 200.00 to start (for the slash) you great platform and a decent stock performer. It handles great.

Whoops! I forgot brushless motors were not waterproof! Looks like I'll stay brushed.

Cynix

If they made brushless waterproof motors that would be the first thing I would get. Dont you need to break in brushed motors and if so how?

Sweet that will be fun to do and I plan to get this covered in mud.

The problem with water is that the metal parts can and will rust if you don't take the proper precautions to prevent it. There are some methods mentioned in the manual (at least they're mentioned in the E-Maxx manual... I haven't looked the Slash manual over real well yet) such as putting some WD-40 on the screws, etc.

Garbage_Man

It's on page 17 and 18 in the Slash manual.

I think we need to start bugging rcscrewz to come out with Stainless stuff for it so we don't need to worry about rust.

Stay away from Venom, but Trinity is a decent brand. Max Amps is good for LiPo's as is TrueRC. SPC is widely accepted as the best source for NiMh batteries.

They have them available at $21 actually.

Id actually like the venom 5000 packs I have, for me they were more durable than the IB4200s I had before that both packs vented within a few charges and they were treated properly.

I have heard mixed reviews on those Venom battery packs. I'd probably go with some higher end packs...

My LHS only has the Venom 5000mAh and the Trinity Refrence 4600mAh both are the only one's with the Traxxas plug. Which one should I get for my Slash?
The Venom is $70 and the Trinity Reference is $65.

cooleocool

I would try to avoid either, personally, but I'd pick the Trinity pack between those two choices.

You might want to look at getting another brand and changing the connectors on the battery packs. I have a pair of DTX4200 6 cells that I've been using for nearly a year now. They are not "peak" performers but they are durable.

+1 on the the fact that Duratrax batteries are durable

I will disagree on the DTX 4200's, see this thread:

Odd.. mine have been great. I always charge them at 5amps, and repeak them after anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes of use. I've used them in my VXL which really pulls hard as well as three different brushless race RCs. I have probably 100 cycles on them over the last year and they just seem to keep delivering.

Jason_garrison
06-10-2008, 08:41 PM
Really batteries tend to react to how they are treated. I have several of the DTX side by side 4200s and love them, I also have the venom 5000s and love them as well. I have also had some durability issues with the IB4200s that everyone was raving about until many had cells vent.

The new EnerG ones seem to a hot battery for now.

But really they all pale compared to LIPO.

MrBadExample
06-10-2008, 10:36 PM
Well, they were not mistreated, but I think the problem I had was the seventh cell seemed to overheat the shrink wrap and it ignited. They were used in a stock E-Maxx, and properly charged and maintained. I have read that the problem lies not necessarily with the batteries but with the cheap connectors within the pack creating high resistance and heat. I will probably tear the next packs apart and replace those connectors with better battery bars. Fortunately, Duratrax was willing to replace them. After a polite e-mail.....

If i put balloons over my batteries to make them waterproof, will it hurt them to be recharged in the balloons?

cooleocool
06-12-2008, 05:31 AM
I wouldn't recommend putting balloons over your batteries. The balloon will trap heat, and could possibly cause your battery to overheat. Batteries don't need to be waterproofed. You just have to make sure that they completely dry out when you're done, otherwise they'll get corroded and die an early death.
