View Full Version : should I use Nitro 33%?

Hi all,
I got a Nitro Sport for Christmas and knew it was coming, so I bought a gallon of fuel. I bought the Traxxas Nitro 33%. I read in the manual they recommend break in with 20% so I went and got a quart of 20%. I have used that up. Should I use the 33% in my Nitro Sport? I ran it today and it seemed ok. Till I crashed and broke my front end. My first breakage. What do you all think of the 33% in the Pro 15?

It should work fine...

It'll need to be tuned richer than on the 20%, but if it seems to be running ok, you should be all good.

I figured that but it is good to know. Thanks. When I use up the gallon of 33%, I will go back to 20%.

The Pro .15 is not designed to take 33% fuel. It will blow up the engine. The max that is recommended for the Pro .15 is 20% nitro content.

I don't see how it could blow up the engine...

It adds more lubrication (good), runs a little cooler (good), and actually should be easier on the engine than the 20% for the same power output, as with the 33%, you can have the same power output running a bit conservative with the tune as you can on 20% with a full race tune.

Does anybody read Traxxas support before asking questions of strangers?

Per Traxxas ---- The Pro.15 responds well to 20% nitro Top Fuel. 33% nitro is perfectly safe for the Pro.15 but extra care should be taken to richen the fuel mixture, monitor the tuning, and watch for overheating in hot climates.

Could you explain your reasoning just a little bit?

It adds more lubrication (good)

Usually what happens when nitromethane is added to the blend of a fuel, it replaces the methanol. The oil content stays the same.

Yes, but with the higher nitro, you have to run a richer mixture. Richer mixture + same percent oil = more oil in engine.

One of my friends up at the lhs had a pro .15. He ran 33% in the engine after he had about a gallon of 20% fuel through. I was properly tuned. After about the 3rd or 4th tank of 33%, the motor quit working and a peice of the piston had broken off and the connecting rod had broken.

33% Nitro fuel just simply has more nitro content than 20%. He should have been fine. But, as Traxxas says, when you pick a certain kind of fuel, stick with it. Use the same type of fuel you used at break-in.

revo racer 01 it was just a fluke. ive run 33% and even a 40% mixture someone blended hiself (all i know is he made 40% nitro, 18% oil) and i havnt blown up my engine yet.

Well if I had read it I wouldn't have asked. I have not read that. Maybe I did and forget. I am getting old. Sorry to bother you with my question I could have gotten somewhere else if I new it was there.

You can really run almost any nitro contenet you want 10%, 20% or 30% or 33% and have no problems with wear if the motor is tuned correctly.

Higher nitro content will run cooler but only if the mtor is tuned correctly by the user. With high nitro contents the motor must be richened up.

Yes you can. Just remember since it is a higher nitro content the engine will run cooler. Keep this in mind when tuning. If you were running good at temps around 240 with 20% then you will probably want to run your truck at 220 with the 33%. Of coarse this is just an example, but you will normally want to run slightly cooler temps than what you did with a lesser nitro content.
You will get more power too..
