EZ-Start problem

My ez start just free wheels, the starter motor doesn't catch. I understand that its the starter bearing, but my question is why did it fail? Is this common? I haven't even broken the boat in. I didn't know if there was a way to fix it or maybe there is some way to prevent this from happening in the future.

try taking the motor and ezstarter off and lookin at the one way bearing and check if the text is toward the motor. if it is then its goin the right way
