View Full Version : Rustler only runs for a few minutes

huh?

My buddy's nitro rustler will start and run for a couple of minutes then die. After it dies he can't get it to start back up. He can take the glow plug out and spray some WD-40 in the engine, turn it over a few times, and it will start back. It will still only run for a couple of minutes and die again. What could be the cause?

Sounds like its lean. Reason for that is the car will run good while it is cold, but by the time it heats up it is burning more fuel than it is givin. Which will make it very hard to start the R/C when its built up 300+ degrees when its starving for fuel. When he is taking out the glow plug and putting WD40 in it then starting it back up during that time it is cooling down which is actually making it easier to start up not the WD40. Start with stock settings and adjust from there. Flush with the low speed and 2.5 turns on the high speed.

I agre with you but I think it should be flush with the lsn and 4 1/2 with the hsn.

I had a pro .15 that did this. Ran a few minutes then die. It would only start back up when it cooled off some. It was time to retire the engine. Like everyone else has said, start with stock settings. If it doesn't work. Also, check for leaks and cracks in the carb. If everything else checks out ok and still has trouble running, you might want to tell him to start checking into a new engine.
Stock is 4.5 turns out.

Could be:
Lean settings
Air leak
Lost compression (worn out piston/sleeve)

4 1/2 turns? Thats way to rich. Mine right now I have at about 3 turns and it runs great.

On a 2.5, stock factory is 4 turns out. On a Pro .15, it's 2.5 turns out.

Well then the first question would be is it a 2.5 or a pro .15. Because I have the brown chassis pro .15 and mine is at about 3 running great. But 4 still seems like alot. Friend has a 2.5 rustler and he runs his at about 3 also.

3 is WAY too rich for a pro. For optimal performance settings, it should be around 2. The only CONCEIVABLE way it could be 3 is if you are running all of these:
A high resistance fuel filter
A high flow air filter
A pipe that causes you to richen the mixture
30% nitro.

I just checked to find exact and its 2 3/4 exact and its not way to much. Do you have a Pro .15 that is still kickin 5 years later? Its the best engine I have. I never hafta tune it. I start it up and go it runs so great.

I also have a Revo and a HPI RS4 MT and TMAXX. So don't think I don't know what im doin....

Do you have a Pro .15 that is still kickin 5 years later? No. I have a Pro .15 that's about to be kicked out the door after only 6.5 months . It has not been a good engine for me. Well, if 2.75 turns works for you, then I guess that's that.
