You have to install the printer software.

What port is it plugged into, and do you have a USB hub?

you might have blown something on the motherboard, but I have never heard of it never being able not to detect it.

If it has ever worked since you last installed the printer drivers, then reinstall them. If it never has worked, well, I dunno. Are you using an old printer cable?

If it is a newer computer, It possibly could be the integrated printer port on the system board "mother board". If it is an old system with a sepparate I/O board with a built in printer port that could be bad. Check your device manager under system property's for conflicts between the printer port and any other devices. Check the sytem bios "cmos setup" to verify the the lpt1 is enabled. All this is assuming that you have verified all connections are connected and good and the drivers have been upgrade or reinstalled. Have you recently upgraded or installed any software or devices. Usb devices can cause conflicts with the printers, especially when dealing with HP. I had a printer that wouldnt work for a user because of a Scanner file was conflicting with the driver. I think I have covered the most possibiliies. If need any more assistance feel free to PM me.
