Anybody got any ideas as to what the difference is between the 2.5 and 2.5r crankcase is apart from part number cause they both look the same. Has anybody put a 2.5r piston and sleeve into a 2.5 crankcase and did it fit and run ok?

The only difference is the blue anodized cooling head. Everything else about the two motors is currently the same.
Initally there were some minor porting differences with the 2.5R, but rolling production changes have brought that to the 2.5 as well.

I have just recieved a reply fron Traxxas customer support stating that a 2.5r piston and sleeve will fit into an older 2.5 crankcase and function normally so why would they put on there parts listing that a 2.5r piston and sleeve must be used with a 2.5r crankcase????? sales ploy ?????

I know for a fact the parts work, as I have one 2.5 running that way.
What you describe is not a sales ploy, but rather based upon the fact that at one point the minor differences forced the newer block to need the 2.5R piston and sleeve. Otherwise there may have been a slight performance difference.
The larger question here is, why do people always want to bring up or even suggest something like a "sales ploy" to begin with? That always seems like it is the first thing suggested, when the erson has no other answer, but in most cases, a "sales ploy" is the most unlikely answer.
Even if it were a "sales ploy" you buy both the 2.5 and 2.5R piston and sleeve sets from Traxxas, so how does a "sales ploy" even prove useful?
Perhaps an apology is in order here, for even sugesting something of that nature, on a forum that Traxxas provides for their users free of charge. ;)
