View Full Version : Cheap MP3 Players

Does anybody have suggestions for cheap MP3 players? I don't need 10-20GB & don't want to pay $200. I'd like to find something from 1-5GB for under $200. Way under if possible. I'd probably be fine with a $100 1GB MP3 player if there is such a thing. So far all of my searching has come up with alot of over $200 10-20GB stuff or 256-512MB ones for under $100, but nothing in-between. What's out there that will suit my needs?

I know nothing about mp3 players, but best buy has a 1gb one, for $199.99.

Edited: Here's what I found on ebay.

Try looking at www.pcmag.com , they have reveiws of mp3 players. I was looking at the first few pages and all that are under 200 are 128mb and 256mb. The only one I can think of that would be around what you wanted is the Dell Pocket DJ (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dj_pocket?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs), it is 199 and has 5gb, with data and music library. I'm not sure what kind of data you can store, I haven't tried to store any on mine yet, and it is small.

If you don't mind the larger size, many portable CD players will play mp3's burned onto a CD. I paid around $29 for one at Best Buy, and I can fit a lot of music on a 700Mb CD-R.

Size matters! The smaller, the better. I already have several portable CD players.

I just got this one off amazon, it says 250, but after I checked out it was 190. It is a 5 gig with built in fm radio, and 10 hours of recording. I love it, i had an i-pod also and I like this one way more. The software is also very easy to use.

Your not going to find a nice, new 1GB player for "way under $200" (if your talking US $) Flash players are good because their not as fragile as HD players are. The downside is that large storage ones are expensive, and usually cant hold past 1GB. HD players are usually expensive and if dropped, they can be toast. If you dont want to spend the money buy an MP3 capable cd player, their cheap and can hold thousands of songs burned onto a cd.

this (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/RCA-Lyra--256MB-MP3-Player--RD2012-/sem/rpsm/oid/93719/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) is the one I want to buy. It has expandable memory. I'll buy a 1 gig memory card on sale for about $50 or less. So that's $170 for 1.25 gig memory and fm radio.

this (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/RCA-Lyra--256MB-MP3-Player--RD1072-/sem/rpsm/oid/99992/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) one is slightly cheaper. The main difference is that it uses AAA instead of AA batteries. I have 8 AA rechargables so it would make sense to buy a player that uses that kind of battery.

or this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=73839&item=5741102230&rd=1)
or this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=73839&item=5741101836&rd=1) ,but it has a built in rechargable battery. If that goes bad so does the player.

I've actually used this (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2590406&cat=132412&type=19&dept=3944&path=0%3A3944%3A172481%3A3983%3A96469%3A132412) one. The sound is very clear. My only problem with it is the built in battery. But the price is right and the size is good.

Thanks everyone (except rustler 2x4 :p), but I ended up getting a RCA LYRA 128MB & a 512MB SD card for it for under $100. I'll be able to fit about 100 songs on it at a time, which is plenty for me. It's tiny (about 2.5"x2"x.75") & I think the flash memory will allow me to enjoy uninterrupted music even during Twinkie withdrawal spasms.
Thanks again!

I got the player at my local Wal-Mart. Normally it's $77 there, but mine was a new return with opened packaging so I talked them into knocking $10 off. I ordered the card from ecost.com. It was $39.99, with a $15 rebate, which I'll have to mail in when it gets here.
edit - I forgot to say I think the sound quality is great. If you can't tell the difference between a song at 128kbps (good CD quality) and 256 kpbs (studio quality), then I wouldn't really worry about the sound quality of any mp3 player anyway, thought I got the impression that some players won't play music that's recorded higher than 128kbps. This one isn't having any trouble with 256 kpbs or even a few 320 kbps songs, LOL. I'd probably have to get some better headphones to really tell a difference anyway.

It comes with MusicMatch Jukebox, but you can also just drag & drop. It shows up as a removeable drive. With WindowsXP, I didn't even need to install drivers.
