Yeah i dont really want to spend any money. I have a Garmen GPS. will that work. It can measure speed i think. because it takes distance from satlites or somthin

GPS is the most accurate way to measure your speed without spending thousands of dollars on a calibrated police radar system. I use a Garmin eTrex GPS. Just reset the max speed display on the GPS, strap it on your car/truck & make your run. When you're done, the GPS will display your max speed.

Just curious, how long does it take for one of those gps units to measure speed? I don't have one so it may not be an issue, but do they have some sort of resolution (i.e. you must be travelling at a constant speed for X seconds before it can track it)?

I think as you go faster it goes like a speedo (GPS) and once you let off the throttle it gives you your reading.

If it's not instant, it's close enough that I can't tell. It gives continous readings, but it depends what display you are using. Max speed & current speed are on different screens. If you have it on max speed, it will show the speed increasing as you accelerate but when you slow down the max speed you reached will stay on the screen until you reset it. If you're viewing the current speed while driving, it will show your actual speed at that moment whether you are accelerating or slowing down or stopped. It has other features such as average speed, distance traveled, etc, etc.

I love my e-trex, 27mph with my e-maxx. You have to go a x amount of feet to be accurate like 10 feet. It will tell you how many feet.

GPS is definitely the way to go for accurate results.

Radar guns can be WAY off if they're not properly calibrated.

The accuracy given in feet is in regard to your triangulated position vs. your actual position on Earth. The accuracy for speed & distance measurements are relative to that & much much more accurate.
